Tuesday's Open Thread

Hey gang, today's the day we discuss elections and voting processes. Proposition 3 is on the ballot here in Pierce County, which, if passed, will give Pierce County voters the opportunity to vote using Instant Runoff Voting, or IRV.

Feel free to speak on this or any other issue as it relates to upcoming elections. This is your democracy, so take advantage of it!

Here are a few advantages of IRV and Pierce County Amendment 3:

• IRV eliminates the spoiler problem associated third party and minor candidates.
• With IRV there are no wasted votes so you can vote for your favorite candidate instead of for the lesser of two evils.
• Amendment 3 will eliminate the unpopular Pick-a-Party primary and give voters the ability to vote for any candidate regardless of party.
• Winners under IRV have a majority of the votes and thus a mandate to govern.
• IRV campaigns tend to be more issue-focused and less negative and personal.
• If Amendment 3 passes then Pierce County will be a leader in Washington State. Other counties and perhaps the entire state will have an example of how to replace the Pick-a-Party with a more popular alternative.

What are the disadvantages? The 2 major parties prefer the Pick-a-Party. And incumbents don’t generally like changing the system that got them elected. But parties and politicians should serve the people, not the other way around.

Check out www.yesonthree.com for more info. Vote yes on 3 on November 7.
