Howard Dean calls for an end to the war in Iraq

Check out this great news from the DNC! (Now if they would only come out in opposition to pro-corporate "free trade"):

Dean called the war in Iraq a failed strategy and asked the Bush Administration to bring our troops home. In yesterday’s Democratic Radio Address (listen here), DNC Chair Howard Dean laid it out as clearly as it can be explained. Here’s the entire talk:

Good morning. This is Governor Howard Dean.

Nearly four years into the war in Iraq, over 2500 brave American soldiers have been killed, more than 20,000 brave American soldiers have been wounded, and $2.5 billion dollars are being spent every week as sectarian violence continues. Corruption and fraud are rampant, and the overall quality of life for the Iraqi people has not improved. Religious fanatics harass women and business owners just yards from the green zone in Baghdad and renegade militia within the Iraqi army are fomenting civil war.
In the meantime, the Bush Administration has left Afghanistan exposed to a resurgence of the Taliban and Al Qaeda; and taken its eye off the ball in places like North Korea and Iran which have now become greater threats.

Those are the facts on the ground.

The bottom line is that the Republicans don't have a plan. 'Stay the course' is not a plan. Saying the problems in Iraq will be left to the next President, is not a plan. Our troops deserve better.

Democrats are determined to set a different course for our Nation, to tell the truth to the American people, to save the lives of our American soldiers and keep America safe. We want to act now rather than let political wrangling lead to more dead and wounded Americans.

We will defend America, but we will be tough and smart.

A majority of democrats have called upon the President to change course in Iraq. Democrats have also offered a plan that asks the president to responsibly redeploy our troops. We believe that we ought to focus on training, logistics, and counter- terrorism, and we can do that with a redeployment of our troops.

The phased re-deployment strategy proposed by Democrats this week calls on the President to do the following:

-- First, work with the Government of Iraq to begin a phasedredeployment of United States troops from Iraq by the end of this year;

-- Second, submit a plan to Congress by the end of 2006 with estimated dates for the continued phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq;

-- Third, we have also told the President that we demand accountability for the resources being spent in Iraq. The cost of the Iraq war will be at least one trillion dollars, enough to finance a health care program for every single American - including our veterans coming home from the war.

-- Fourth, expedite the transition of United States forces in Iraq to a limited presence and mission of training, providing logistical support, protecting United States infrastructure and personnel, and participating in targeted counterterrorism activities.

-- Finally, our plan recognizes that during and after the phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq, the United States will need to sustain a non-military effort to actively support reconstruction, governance, and a durable political solution in Iraq.

The Iraqi leaders themselves have set a six-month goal for assuming their responsibility for security. Our proposal for the beginning of a phased redeployment by the end of this year fits the goals of Iraq's leaders very well.

We have asked Republicans of good will to come forward to support a policy that is good for America and good for our troops. And some have.

Democrats will continue to offer America a real change, a new direction for our country. We see a country in which honesty, openness and respect is restored to our government. We see an America where we are all on the same team again, working together to deal with problems American Families face, Defense, Security, Health Care, Jobs. We see an America where the Government does not question the patriotism of any American if they disagree with the President.

The parallels between the mistakes being made today in Iraq and the behavior of our government a generation ago are striking. Troops are sent to fight by an administration that refuses to listen to the advice of military leaders. The Administration decides it's ok to conceal information from the Congress and the American people. Promises like "stay the course" "Peace is at Hand" or "the insurgency is in its last throes" are made by an increasingly desperate Administration.

A majority of the American people don't believe the President is telling the truth, while the Administration and its supporters question the patriotism of veterans who disagree with them, accusing them of "cut and run".

And among the victims are brave American soldiers who are the targets of an insurgency because of failed political leadership and a lack of foresight and planning. We don't want another wall with 55,000 names of courageous Americans who were let down by their Government.

The words "cut and run" don't belong in this debate. That's a disservice to our courageous soldiers. This debate is about not making the same mistakes our Government made a generation ago.
Democrats believe it's time for a new direction in Iraq that's tough and smart, and we offer America a security strategy that's tough and smart.

This is Gov. Howard Dean, proud of our troops, and proud to be part of a party offering America a new direction.

Free Press Action Alert: Save Net Neutrality!

Save the Internet: Click here

Tell Sen. Cantwell to Support Net Neutrality:

(202) 224-3441 or Toll-free at 1-888-355-3588

Support SavetheInternet.com

Your Senator, Maria Cantwell, will cast a vote this week that could determine the fate of the Internet. The House has already voted to gut Net Neutrality -- the principle that keeps the Internet free and open to all. We cannot allow the same thing happen in the Senate.

Tell Senator Cantwell not to let companies like AT&T and Verizon become gatekeepers on the information superhighway.

Your phone calls actually make a difference. Call now and urge Senator Cantwell to support the bipartisan Snowe-Dorgan Internet Freedom amendment in the Commerce Committee.

Sen. Maria Cantwell
(202) 224-3441

Ask Senator Cantwell to support the Snowe-Dorgan Net Neutrality amendment to the larger Telecom Act (S. 2686). Net Neutrality will prevent the largest phone and cable companies from blocking or slowing access to Web sites that don't pay their added tolls.

More than a million Americans have already voiced their support for Internet Freedom. But companies like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast are spending tens of millions of dollars to drown out the public outcry. Make your voice heard. Call your Senator now:

Sen. Maria Cantwell
(202) 224-3441

Many members haven't yet taken an official position on Net Neutrality -- so it's crucial that they hear from you today.

Thanks for helping Save the Internet.

Voting reform advocates: come out to explain to Democrats (including our Pierce County Auditor) why voting machines are bad news!

Attention, all Pierce County Democrats, Greens, Libertarians, and anyone else who cares about the integrity of our voting process:

Pierce County Auditor will be speaking to the monthly meeting of the 27th District Democrats, Monday June 26th at 7 PM, in the meeting room of the Downtown Public Library, on Tacoma Avenue South in Tacoma.

Please come armed with the recent Rolling Stone article and any other literature that can explain to the Democrats, and McCarthy if she'll listen, why they should reject these machines and demand a return to hand-counted paper ballots. Paper trails are not enough! These machines can be used to steal votes and do all kinds of shady things, and the auditor has refused to accept until now that they are insecure. I would encourage everyone who knows anything about this to bring everything they've got to this meeting and make their voices heard!

For all the information you're going to need, check out these resources:

Blackboxvoting.org - latest news and the entire text of Bev Harris's book.

Votersunite.org - a great organization with an awesome, easily printable factsheet on these issues, available here.

One more thing you can do: pass on this information to everyone you know, including Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Frank Blair (of Equal Time), and any other talk show hosts that have shows in the Northwest. Also, send this information to other activists, reporters and local politicians. If we can fill this room with a host of people oopposed to electronic voting machines, perhaps we can save our county's citizens from that most terrible fate, an insecure democracy.

Democracy needs our help! Get active now!

What: Pat McCarthy, Pierce County Auditor, at 27th District Dems
Where: Downtown Public Library
When: 7 PM, Monday, June 26th

Pierce County Auditor Pat McCarthy defends use of for-profit voting machines

Yours truly took Ms. McCarthy to task for not understanding the problems of electronic voting machines and centralized vote tabulator software on Frank Blair's Equal Time, a great local show. (the link takes you to the show archive - I'm about halfway through)

My major problem with Pat is that she parrots the same official line as every other elections official: "Everythings fine, these machines are great, a little bit of error is normal, nothing to worry about, paper voting has its problems as well, don't worry, just accept that this is how it's done and we're protecting your vote."

Now I respect the fact that we have a Democratic Auditor, and she is a good woman, as far as I know, but this stuff drives me totally nuts. You can hear me in the clip becoming unhinged. I basically just feel that people in her position, with the power to make everything perfect and to spread the message of vote security, should actually do the research instead of relying on materials from the voting machine companies and their allies in big government. Paper ballots, counted by hand, work for every other country in the industrialized world, so why not here?

Why not, Ms. McCarthy? What's so special about these machines?

Here's my latest email to the Auditor:

Hi Ms. McCarthy, my name is Jeff Richardson. I was the activist that called into Equal Time yesterday during your appearance. I'm sorry that I was so intense. I spoke over you at least twice, which is bad radio and worse communication. I hope you don't take my conversational skills as evidence of poor research skills, because I do understand this issue intimately, and this democracy is presently in the grip of an administration that doesn't belong there. These people are cold-blooded killers and thieves, and that's not being partisan. That's the truth. When you say that there are a few bad apples that have to be weeded out, you neglect to recognize that most criminals that get away with crimes don't get away with them because they're geniuses. They get away with them because the people with the power to stop them choose to do nothing.

I accuse you of abdicating your responsibility to secure our most sacred of common rights, our vote, by refusing to move this issue forward. Having Sequoia machines does not prevent these criminals from flipping our votes. Having no machines would. We need to return the vote to the people that give it its legitimacy, and shilling for these multi-national corporations is not doing the peoples' business. I will use my platform as a blogger and a local activist to spread this truth, and I hope you will look into this in more detail.

I would be happy to connect you with electronic security experts not supplied by the voting machine industry to show you how dangerous this situation really is. There are also websites available that can educate you about the massive scope of this problem. They are www.blackboxvoting.org and www.votersunite.org - please avail yourself of these resources and contact me as soon as humanly possible.

Our very system of democracy depends on all of us defending the instruments that make it possible. I pray that you will have the courage and the wisdom to make the right choice.

Good luck and God bless,

Jeff Richardson

Congressman Dicks responds regarding the new draconian Food Labeling law

I don't always agreee with Norm, but this letter was very thoughtful, so I thought I'd share it with our readers (all six of them, ha ha):

Dear Mr. Richardson :

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the National Uniformity for Food Act, H.R. 4167. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.
Like you, I have serious concerns about H.R. 4167 and I voted against it when it came before the House for a vote on March 8 th . Unfortunately, the bill passed by a vote of 283-139. It now goes to the Senate for consideration. While supporters of this legislation claim that it will strengthen food safety protections by creating national standards for food safety and warning labeling, I am afraid that H.R. 4167 will actually create a critical gap in the safety net that protects public health.

Currently, more than 85 state and 3,000 local regulatory agencies, including public health and agriculture departments, license and inspect more than one million retail food establishments (grocery stores, restaurants, nursing homes, etc.) under state laws and regulations to ensure that consumers are protected from unsafe food. H.R. 4167 would undercut a state's ability to implement laws regulating food safety, taking a historically state role and giving it to the federal government. Two hundred state food safety laws and regulations that have been proven effective and necessary would be immediately preempted under H.R. 4167, and t he Congressional Budget Office has estimated that H.R. 4167 would cost taxpayers $100 million over the next few years, with unknown additional costs on the federal government and state and local governments.

While I was disappointed that H.R. 4167 passed in the House, I assure you that I will remain committed to protecting the safety of our food supply and will keep your comments in mind should I have the opportunity to vote on this issue again in the future.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please feel free to do so on any issue of concern to you.

Community Radio under attack in Oaxaca!

This just in from Reclaim the Media!

Please join us this Monday, June 19th, at 1:00 PM, in front of the Seattle Mexican consulate, to protest last Wednesday's brutal police attack on a non-violent encampment of public schoolteachers in Oaxaca, Mexico, and on their community radio station, Radio Planton.

On Wedneday, June 14th, 3000 state police attacked an encampment of public schoolteachers, in the Mexican city of Oaxaca, and ransacked their community radio station.

The 70,000 teachers had been out on strike for over 3 weeks demanding a modest cost-of-living adjustment, free school breakfasts, and additional resources for school infrastructure. They were attacked at dawn, while many teachers were still asleep, in the encampment, with their children.

Police dogs, tear gas, rubber bullets, and real bullets were among the arsenal used by the state police.

The teachers' radio station (Radio Planton) was ransacked. All of the equipment was destroyed. The radio personnel were all beaten and arrested.

Radio Planton went on the air exactly one year ago, and has provided a much-needed media alternative for the city of Oaxaca. The station had been transmitting twenty-four hours a day, throughout the teachers' strike, receiving hundreds of calls from civil society expressing their support and solidarity for the teachers and for the station. The radio personnel continued transmitting even as the riot police entered their facility and began attacking their colleagues. I personally participated in the
founding of Radio Planton, and have continued to be an active participant in the station. The people who were beaten and arrested on Wednesday, when the station was ransacked, are dear friends of mine.

The confirmed list of wounded from Wednesday's police attack (released today) tops 90 people. Some of the people arrested still have not been accounted for (including two of the Radio Planton staff). It has been confirmed that a pregnant teacher miscarried as a result of the police violence she suffered, and was later denied access to an ambulance by the same police who attacked her.

This police repression comes 5 weeks after the violent attack on the community of San Salvador Atenco, which resulted in the death of two youth and the confirmed sexual assault of over 37 women. Just two weeks before that, striking mine workers, in the state of Michoacan, were attacked by federal police, leaving two miners dead from bullet wounds.

We are asking you to please join us to show solidarity with the schoolteachers in Oaxaca and to denounce the repeated use of deadly police force to repress workers, communities, and independent media fighting for social and economic justice.

The Mexican consulate is located in downtown Seattle at 2132 3rd Avenue.

For more information contact Jill at 206-851-6785, info@corrugate.org

More information about the situation in Oaxaca available at www.narconews.com and www.corrugate.org. In Spanish at www.mexico.indymedia.org. And hear is the rest.

Great letters in the TNT regarding Lt. Watada's stand against the war

There were two excellent letters to the editor in the TNT today regarding Lt. Watada's courageous stand against the immoral occupation of Iraq (it's not a war).

I liked this one the best because it points out that Bush truly is a great enemy of the Constitution and defying his edicts is perfectly legal considering the damage he is doing to our country.

Calling all patriots and trade unionists: Oppose the NAFTA Superhighway!

It's true folks. The NAFTA Superhighway is coming and it's coming fast. If you know any Teamsters, Longshoremen, or delegates to the Central Labor Council, I urge you to contact them and tell them all about it. We need to challenge this move now and not stop until it is a distant memory. The NAFTA Superhighway will cripple our nation's shipping industry and give our highways over to non-union Mexican truckers.

How's that gonna help our economy? This fascist scumbag Bush doesn't care anymore. He got his golden parachute and he will be shipping off to Bermuda just as soon as this country's economy goes bust. That's why we have to take this into our own hands now, before this rat Congress is able to totally sell off our nation's infrastucture.

Who's with me?

Sign the petition to hand count the ballots in San Diego's Congressional election!

Just heard Brad Friedman of Bradblog.com on Thom Hartmann's show talking about the apparent theft of the Congressional seat in California's 50th district. Turns out that all the voting machines in that county were Diebold machines, and many were even taken home for days or weeks by poll workers! These machines are notorious for being insecure, and yet they were still used. I smell a rat. That's why I signed velvetrevolution's petition for Francine Busby (the Democratic candidate) to challenge the results of the election at least until all the votes can be counted.

Go to Velvetrevolution.us to read and sign the petition, and please, send it to everyone you know. The only way to stop the Corporatist theft of our democracy is to challenge it head-on everytime it moves to take away our rights. We have to take a stand, if democracy is to survive. And if we really want to preserve our rights and our nation's fragile democracy, we ought to ensure that no corporations have control over our votes. Go to www.votersunite.org to learn more and to get involved.

If you live in Pierce County, why not drop County Auditor Pat McCarthy a line and let her know how totally worthless these voting machines and vote tabulators are. We want paper ballots now!

Democracy begins with you! Tag, you're it! (tip of the hat to Thom Hartmann, the closest thing we have to a Franklin Roosevelt at this time)

Army moving to silence Lt. Watada

Mark Jensen of United for Peace Pierce County sends this dispatch regarding the latest servicemember in our area to reject deployment to Iraq:

Lt. Ehren Watada, who announced this week that he would refuse to obey an order to deploy to Iraq on the grounds that the order is illegal because the Iraq war itself is illegal, was told Thursday that an investigation into his public speech in opposition to the war in Iraq ws underway. A press release issued by Friends and Family of Lt. Ehren Watada, a supporting organization, said: "Lt. Watada was read his rights and declined to make a statement without a lawyer present. In response, Lt. Watada confirmed, 'I have a legal and ethical obligation to speak out against, and refuse to fight, this patently illegal war in Iraq. This has not hanged.' It is expected that the military is moving to stage a Commanding Officer's Non-Judicial Punishment hearing (Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice) in order to impose even further restrictions on Lt. Watada. The military will likely focus their investigation on vague UCMJ articles that bar 'conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman' (Article 133) and 'any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President (or any senior members of government)' (Article 88)."

MILITARY ATTEMPTS TO STOP LT. WATADA FROM SPEAKING AGAINST ILLEGAL WAR

Friends and Family of Lt. Ehren Watada
June 9, 2006

http://thankyoult.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=23&Itemid=9

On Thursday, June 8, 2006 U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada's commanding
officer moved to prosecute Lt. Watada for protected speech. An official
investigation into his public speech in opposition to the illegal war in Iraq
is underway. Lt. Watada was read his rights and declined to make a statement
without a lawyer present.

In response, Lt. Watada confirmed, “I have a legal and ethical obligation to
speak out against, and refuse to fight, this patently illegal war in Iraq.
This has not changed.

Eric Seitz, lead attorney for Lt. Watada's legal team, declared: "It is
obvious that the military is simply trying to keep him from speaking out in
opposition to the unlawful war."

On Wednesday, June 7th U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada became the
first U.S. commissioned officer to publicly refuse deployment to the unlawful
Iraq war and occupation. Standing before the national media at a Tacoma,
Washington, press conference, Lt. Watada outlined his duty to refuse the
illegal order to deploy in support of an illegal war. A showdown with
military is imminent as Lt. Watada's Stryker brigade is scheduled to deploy
from Fort Lewis, Washington, for Iraq within days.

Steve Morse, director of the GI Rights Hotline, a non-governmental legal
resource center for members of the military, explains: "When soldiers join
the military they swear to uphold our Constitution, they do not give up their
basic right to freedom of speech." According Mr. Morse, "Members of the
military clearly have the right to say what they think and feel about the
military, and even participate in peaceful demonstrations, as long as they are
off-duty, out of uniform, off-base, and within the United States. This is
outlined in Department of Defense Directive 1325.6."

It is expected that the military is moving to stage a Commanding Officer's
Non-Judicial Punishment hearing (Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military
Justice) in order to impose even further restrictions on Lt. Watada. The
military will likely focus their investigation on vague UCMJ articles that bar
"conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman" (Article 133) and "any
commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President (or any
senior members of government)" (Article 88).

Thank you, Mark, for sending out this information, and may Lt. Watada receive the highest level of support our community can grant him. And don't forget the other casualties of this war fever, casualties such as Sgt. Kevin Benderman, who is still in jail for his refusal to deploy to Iraq.

Kennedy election theft article update

Vemrion over at Electric Monkey Pants has done a great job at dissecting the buzz around the Kennedy article. Meanwhile Ed Schultz is blasting it as if it's not news. F*** Ed Schultz. The guy is a tool of the DLC. Howard Dean and Jesse Jackson have tackled this issue, and so who really cares what John Kerry says about it, Ed? John Kerry is the freaking Skull and Bonesman that got us into this mess.
He may have cared about getting us out of Vietnam in the 70's, but something has gotten into his soul in the intervening years. Something that makes him have no concern for the fate of black voters and anyone else whose vote wasn't counted.

Bobby Kennedy, Jr. unveils latest hard-hitting Rolling Stone expose - GOP stole 2004 election!

This is it, folks, our moment of truth. If you don't read this article by Bobby Kennedy on the subject of the Republican theft of the 2004 election you are making a huge mistake. (Watch RFK on Tucker Carlson's show - he does very well)

The next thing you absolutely must do, once you've completed the article: CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES and ALL LOCAL NEWSMEDIA! To reach your representatives in Washington, call 1-888-355-3588, and if you don't know their names, give the operator your zipcode. I would also encourage you to call their local district offices in your region, because the folks who man those phones are generally better informed and more trusted by the representatives.

You also need to contact our local media: if they hear from enough constituents they may reference this article. If you still don't think that the theft of an American Presidential election isn't the most important news story in our nation's history, please allow me to take the next few minutes to convince you.

FAIR PLAY

I think nearly everyone can agree that one of the most fundamental aspects of the American character is our shared respect for the value of Fair Play. Our desire for fairness is what provoked the founders to demand "No taxation without representation!" in the days and months following the Boston Tea Party. What you may not know is that that rallying cry was not just a rebuke of the King and his abuses, but also against the abuses of the era's reigning monopolistic corporation, the East India Company, who stood to gain millions thanks to the unfair Stamp Act passed over the opposition of small, independent traders in America. From the very beginning, fairness was the very thing Americans wanted most, and were unable to receive.

We fought and died in great numbers to win this republic away from the greedy King George and his wealthy court of monopolistic bottom feeders. We fought a civil war in part to extend our understanding of fairness to include slaves and their offspring. We fought in the streets of America's largest cities to win an 8-hour day and a forty-hour workweek. We fought and died in the streets of Selma and MOntgomery for the rights of African Americans to vote and have full representation in government. We fought for these things not because we were all in agreement on every aspect of these causes, but because we believed that fairness was our highest virtue. We set aside these United States as a beacon of hope for those suffering masses who had no fairness in their countries. We carved out a system of governance in this country that was designed to ensure that everyone, no matter how limited his or her means at birth, could become something better.

Fair Play is the watchword in this time, when we are mired in an unpopular war and services across the board are seeing savage cuts, once again we are witnessing this fundamental American value being trashed by those at the top, in part to reward their campaign contributors with billion-dollar tax cuts and massive corporate welfare. If we are to find a way out of this mess, it is going to require that we bring back the value of fairness and lift it up to the light for all to see, the way we did during the Civil Rights Movement. The way we did during the first days of the Labor Movement. The way we did all the way back at the founding of this country.

If our elections are insecure, then we cannot ensure the integrity of our vote. And if the integrity of our vote is in question, then the legitimacy of any elected official is totally in doubt. Think of it, those of us in Washington practically lose our minds when the Seahawks get a string of bad calls during the Super Bowl, but when it comes to our vote, we have nothing to say? How dare we call ourselves patriots? How dare we hold ourselves up as some sort of shining example to the rest of the world, when the very system that would ensure that our wishes are upheld are completely in the grip of a gang of thieves who would rather make themselves rich than provide for the secutiry of their own country?

If we don't take up this charge, it is not the Bush administration that we should blame. It is we the people, the very people who, when faced with overwhelming evidence of the theft of our democracy turned their heads and decided to think of prettier things, it is we the people of these United States who will ultimately be responsible for whatever comes our way.

When Fair Play is removed from our list of American values, everything else is up for grabs. What's to stop the next crop of unelected leaders from doing even more damage? What's to stop the next criminal regime from executing terror attacks against our own citizens to justify endless warfare against nations that never attacked us? It worked for Hitler, and he nearly conquered the entire world. Do we want to go down that road?

I don't think so. CALL YOUR LEGISLATORS NOW, at 1-888-355-3588. Your country depends on it. The fate of our entire democracy depends on it. Don't wait. Be a part of the solution, and let's fix this problem once and for all.
