Check out this great news from the DNC! (Now if they would only come out in opposition to pro-corporate "free trade"):
Dean called the war in Iraq a failed strategy and asked the Bush Administration to bring our troops home. In yesterday’s Democratic Radio Address (listen here), DNC Chair Howard Dean laid it out as clearly as it can be explained. Here’s the entire talk:
Good morning. This is Governor Howard Dean.
Nearly four years into the war in Iraq, over 2500 brave American soldiers have been killed, more than 20,000 brave American soldiers have been wounded, and $2.5 billion dollars are being spent every week as sectarian violence continues. Corruption and fraud are rampant, and the overall quality of life for the Iraqi people has not improved. Religious fanatics harass women and business owners just yards from the green zone in Baghdad and renegade militia within the Iraqi army are fomenting civil war.
In the meantime, the Bush Administration has left Afghanistan exposed to a resurgence of the Taliban and Al Qaeda; and taken its eye off the ball in places like North Korea and Iran which have now become greater threats.
Those are the facts on the ground.
The bottom line is that the Republicans don't have a plan. 'Stay the course' is not a plan. Saying the problems in Iraq will be left to the next President, is not a plan. Our troops deserve better.
Democrats are determined to set a different course for our Nation, to tell the truth to the American people, to save the lives of our American soldiers and keep America safe. We want to act now rather than let political wrangling lead to more dead and wounded Americans.
We will defend America, but we will be tough and smart.
A majority of democrats have called upon the President to change course in Iraq. Democrats have also offered a plan that asks the president to responsibly redeploy our troops. We believe that we ought to focus on training, logistics, and counter- terrorism, and we can do that with a redeployment of our troops.
The phased re-deployment strategy proposed by Democrats this week calls on the President to do the following:
-- First, work with the Government of Iraq to begin a phasedredeployment of United States troops from Iraq by the end of this year;
-- Second, submit a plan to Congress by the end of 2006 with estimated dates for the continued phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq;
-- Third, we have also told the President that we demand accountability for the resources being spent in Iraq. The cost of the Iraq war will be at least one trillion dollars, enough to finance a health care program for every single American - including our veterans coming home from the war.
-- Fourth, expedite the transition of United States forces in Iraq to a limited presence and mission of training, providing logistical support, protecting United States infrastructure and personnel, and participating in targeted counterterrorism activities.
-- Finally, our plan recognizes that during and after the phased redeployment of United States forces from Iraq, the United States will need to sustain a non-military effort to actively support reconstruction, governance, and a durable political solution in Iraq.
The Iraqi leaders themselves have set a six-month goal for assuming their responsibility for security. Our proposal for the beginning of a phased redeployment by the end of this year fits the goals of Iraq's leaders very well.
We have asked Republicans of good will to come forward to support a policy that is good for America and good for our troops. And some have.
Democrats will continue to offer America a real change, a new direction for our country. We see a country in which honesty, openness and respect is restored to our government. We see an America where we are all on the same team again, working together to deal with problems American Families face, Defense, Security, Health Care, Jobs. We see an America where the Government does not question the patriotism of any American if they disagree with the President.
The parallels between the mistakes being made today in Iraq and the behavior of our government a generation ago are striking. Troops are sent to fight by an administration that refuses to listen to the advice of military leaders. The Administration decides it's ok to conceal information from the Congress and the American people. Promises like "stay the course" "Peace is at Hand" or "the insurgency is in its last throes" are made by an increasingly desperate Administration.
A majority of the American people don't believe the President is telling the truth, while the Administration and its supporters question the patriotism of veterans who disagree with them, accusing them of "cut and run".
And among the victims are brave American soldiers who are the targets of an insurgency because of failed political leadership and a lack of foresight and planning. We don't want another wall with 55,000 names of courageous Americans who were let down by their Government.
The words "cut and run" don't belong in this debate. That's a disservice to our courageous soldiers. This debate is about not making the same mistakes our Government made a generation ago.
Democrats believe it's time for a new direction in Iraq that's tough and smart, and we offer America a security strategy that's tough and smart.
This is Gov. Howard Dean, proud of our troops, and proud to be part of a party offering America a new direction.

Attention, all Pierce County Democrats, Greens, Libertarians, and anyone else who cares about the integrity of our voting process:
Yours truly took Ms. McCarthy to task for not understanding the problems of electronic voting machines and centralized vote tabulator software on Frank Blair's Equal Time, a great local show. (the link takes you to the show archive - I'm about halfway through)
I don't always agreee with Norm, but this letter was very thoughtful, so I thought I'd share it with our readers (all six of them, ha ha):
Dear Mr. Richardson :
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the National Uniformity for Food Act, H.R. 4167. I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.
Like you, I have serious concerns about H.R. 4167 and I voted against it when it came before the House for a vote on March 8 th . Unfortunately, the bill passed by a vote of 283-139. It now goes to the Senate for consideration. While supporters of this legislation claim that it will strengthen food safety protections by creating national standards for food safety and warning labeling, I am afraid that H.R. 4167 will actually create a critical gap in the safety net that protects public health.
Currently, more than 85 state and 3,000 local regulatory agencies, including public health and agriculture departments, license and inspect more than one million retail food establishments (grocery stores, restaurants, nursing homes, etc.) under state laws and regulations to ensure that consumers are protected from unsafe food. H.R. 4167 would undercut a state's ability to implement laws regulating food safety, taking a historically state role and giving it to the federal government. Two hundred state food safety laws and regulations that have been proven effective and necessary would be immediately preempted under H.R. 4167, and t he Congressional Budget Office has estimated that H.R. 4167 would cost taxpayers $100 million over the next few years, with unknown additional costs on the federal government and state and local governments.
While I was disappointed that H.R. 4167 passed in the House, I assure you that I will remain committed to protecting the safety of our food supply and will keep your comments in mind should I have the opportunity to vote on this issue again in the future.
Again, thank you for contacting me. Please feel free to do so on any issue of concern to you.

There were two excellent letters to the editor in the TNT today regarding Lt. Watada's courageous stand against the immoral occupation of Iraq (it's not a war).
It's true folks. The NAFTA Superhighway is coming and it's coming fast. If you know any Teamsters, Longshoremen, or delegates to the Central Labor Council, I urge you to contact them and tell them all about it. We need to challenge this move now and not stop until it is a distant memory. The NAFTA Superhighway will cripple our nation's shipping industry and give our highways over to non-union Mexican truckers.
Just heard Brad Friedman of Bradblog.com on Thom Hartmann's show talking about the apparent theft of the Congressional seat in California's 50th district. Turns out that all the voting machines in that county were Diebold machines, and many were even taken home for days or weeks by poll workers! These machines are notorious for being insecure, and yet they were still used. I smell a rat. That's why I signed velvetrevolution's petition for Francine Busby (the Democratic candidate) to challenge the results of the election at least until all the votes can be counted.
According to Olyblog.net, George W. Bush is coming to Bellevue tomorrow to pimp for Dave "Rubber Bullets" Reichert! Get up there and raise some hell for the common good! Go to Olyblog.net to learn more and to get involved in the protest of this Corporate Criminal Conspirator and his fascist regime.
According to Thom Hartmann, the Supreme Court just ruled, 5-4, that the police do not have to knock before entering your home or place of business. Just one more gift for the Corporate Criminal Conspiracy from our favorite fascist, Chief Justice John Roberts.
Mark Jensen of United for Peace Pierce County sends this dispatch regarding the latest servicemember in our area to reject deployment to Iraq:
Lt. Ehren Watada, who announced this week that he would refuse to obey an order to deploy to Iraq on the grounds that the order is illegal because the Iraq war itself is illegal, was told Thursday that an investigation into his public speech in opposition to the war in Iraq ws underway. A press release issued by Friends and Family of Lt. Ehren Watada, a supporting organization, said: "Lt. Watada was read his rights and declined to make a statement without a lawyer present. In response, Lt. Watada confirmed, 'I have a legal and ethical obligation to speak out against, and refuse to fight, this patently illegal war in Iraq. This has not hanged.' It is expected that the military is moving to stage a Commanding Officer's Non-Judicial Punishment hearing (Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice) in order to impose even further restrictions on Lt. Watada. The military will likely focus their investigation on vague UCMJ articles that bar 'conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman' (Article 133) and 'any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President (or any senior members of government)' (Article 88)."

MILITARY ATTEMPTS TO STOP LT. WATADA FROM SPEAKING AGAINST ILLEGAL WAR
Friends and Family of Lt. Ehren Watada

On Thursday, June 8, 2006 U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada's commanding
officer moved to prosecute Lt. Watada for protected speech. An official
investigation into his public speech in opposition to the illegal war in Iraq
is underway. Lt. Watada was read his rights and declined to make a statement
without a lawyer present.
In response, Lt. Watada confirmed, “I have a legal and ethical obligation to
speak out against, and refuse to fight, this patently illegal war in Iraq.
This has not changed.
Eric Seitz, lead attorney for Lt. Watada's legal team, declared: "It is
obvious that the military is simply trying to keep him from speaking out in
opposition to the unlawful war."
On Wednesday, June 7th U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada became the
first U.S. commissioned officer to publicly refuse deployment to the unlawful
Iraq war and occupation. Standing before the national media at a Tacoma,
Washington, press conference, Lt. Watada outlined his duty to refuse the
illegal order to deploy in support of an illegal war. A showdown with
military is imminent as Lt. Watada's Stryker brigade is scheduled to deploy
from Fort Lewis, Washington, for Iraq within days.
Steve Morse, director of the GI Rights Hotline, a non-governmental legal
resource center for members of the military, explains: "When soldiers join
the military they swear to uphold our Constitution, they do not give up their
basic right to freedom of speech." According Mr. Morse, "Members of the
military clearly have the right to say what they think and feel about the
military, and even participate in peaceful demonstrations, as long as they are
off-duty, out of uniform, off-base, and within the United States. This is
outlined in Department of Defense Directive 1325.6."
It is expected that the military is moving to stage a Commanding Officer's
Non-Judicial Punishment hearing (Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military
Justice) in order to impose even further restrictions on Lt. Watada. The
military will likely focus their investigation on vague UCMJ articles that bar
"conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman" (Article 133) and "any
commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President (or any
senior members of government)" (Article 88).
Read the engaging post on this topic over at George Washington's blog.
I just caught some shady lady pitching the new I-933 initiative, claiming it's all about eminent domain. It isn't. It's basically like the NAFTA of Washington State, in which corpos can rip off the environment and not have to pay for it.
Vemrion over at Electric Monkey Pants has done a great job at dissecting the buzz around the Kennedy article. Meanwhile Ed Schultz is blasting it as if it's not news. F*** Ed Schultz. The guy is a tool of the DLC. Howard Dean and Jesse Jackson have tackled this issue, and so who really cares what John Kerry says about it, Ed? John Kerry is the freaking Skull and Bonesman that got us into this mess.
This is it, folks, our moment of truth. If you don't read this article by Bobby Kennedy on the subject of the Republican theft of the 2004 election you are making a huge mistake. (Watch RFK on Tucker Carlson's show - he does very well)
