My anti-933 editorial makes it into the Tacoma Weekly!

Hey folks, I got my guest editorial printed in the Tacoma Weekly! They don't post their opinion page online, so you'll have to pick up a hard copy to see the evidence, but trust me, I'm in there! I've reprinted the letter here in its entirety below. I would encourage anyone who reads this and is disgusted by the possibility of this thing passing to follow my lead and send your letters into local media! We need to kill this thing in the bathtub before it gets big and nasty and threatens to destroy our entire State!

As a blogger and community activist, I've been noticing a lot of big business folks tend to use the same arguments to support the pro-I-933 position, without coming right out and saying they would vote for or against it. Don Brunell is no different.

Don is right in saying that initiatives are not the ideal way to make law. That's because the kinds of regulations this initiative is designed to unravel are very complex compromises between big businesses, small businesses, and residential property owners.

If Initiative 933 passes and becomes law, it will allow any property owner to sue the State if he feels that a law or regulation passed by the citizens infringes on his ability to make money. If that suit wins, the property owner makes money equal to what he claims that he lost due to the environmental and other zoning regulations in the area.

For example: say you and several of your neighbors decide to get a law passed that bans anyone in our area from storing toxic waste, because of our fears that it could leach into our groundwater. If I-933 were to become law, some big corporation that wants to site their toxic waste dump on their property next to yours could claim that their company is losing twenty million dollars a year because of State regulations.

This would force the State to make a devil's bargain: either pay off the corporation or strike down the law that you and your neighbors got passed, specifically to protect your water!

But it's even worse than that. Lots of rich developers and huge corporations have big tracts of land that sit next to State land. On one of these huge lots, an out-of-state corporation could claim under I-933 that they aren't allowed to build housing developments and shopping malls due to the presence of the Spotted Owl or some other protected creature.

The State now gets to make another terrible choice: either allow the corporation to build anyway, despite the effect that development will have on wildlife and the broader ecosystem, or pay the corporation whatever a judge determines they may have lost.

Clearly this initiative, if passed, will have the twin effect of costing taxpayers millions in settlements, and having corporations and rich landowners forcing citizens' to pay for the effects of their development. Essentially, passing this law is less likely to make your property more valuable and more likely to entice big companies to dump poisons and unsightly buildings right next to it, effectively reducing your property's value.

Good government means allowing citizens to work with their elected officials, to determine which laws will best protect the environment and the common value of every citizen's property. Passing I-933 will totally preempt that in favor of Weyerhauser and Wal-Mart, and every other rich developer with no more concern for his neighbors than he has for a field of prairie dogs cowering in front of his bulldozers. If this law passes, you will be expendable, and the beloved property you want so much to make money on won't be worth even half what you paid for it, now that any rich corporation can park an industrial plant next to it and pump out nasty black smoke all day.

The best reason to vote against I-933 is to see who is bankrolling it's campaign, out-of-state developers, huge corporations like Weyerhauser, and rich landowners with nothing to lose.

For those of you that own businesses, passage of this Initiative will be detrimental to your ability to make your business profitable. Small business owners, with fairly small parcels of land, can't hide their buildings away from the edges of their property. Anything their neighbor's businesses do affects them. For example, someone running a daycare certainly isn't going to want to be sited next to a foundry or other noisy business. A company that makes precision machine parts doesn't want to be next to a sawmill, pouring out huge clouds of fine sawdust. And imagine the retail business owner that finds out that the abandoned building next door to them is suddenly going to become a seedy stripclub. I-933 not only makes that possible, it makes it practically inevitable.

When it comes to voting this November, We the People had better pay attention, because if we lose this one, we're gonna be in a world of hurt. Please folks, Vote No on Initiative 933. Do it for yourself, and do it for your children. But most importantly, do it for future generations, who will need clean water to drink, clean air to breathe, and communities in which the people, not the corporations, determine our fate.

Sign the petition to reinstate Mike Malloy!

Air America, the progressive radio network, has just dropped Mike Malloy from syndication, which means that he will no longer be heard by millions of people nationwide. Those of us who love Malloy are convinced that this has something to do with his very vocal stand on Bush administration complicity in the 9/11 attacks.

If you believe that this issue must be discussed on air, or if you just love Malloy and don't want to lose his radio show, sign the petition to reinstate his contract now!

One year later - have we learned our lesson?

In this stunning piece, Greg Palast explains what is possible when Americans get angry enough at the rich and influential rulers of our country.

You ought to read it, and you ought to follow Huey's lead and advocate for some real life-changing changes in the way this government works.

By the way, NPR has been utterly pathetic and worthless on this. They are still accepting the right-wing spin that the Federal Government isn't the lead dog when it comes to disaster preparation and relief. Who cares about state and local authorities when it comes to national disasters? The Feds are the ones who are supposed to handle events of this magnitude, and they have all the authority they need.

They let those people die. Deal with it, and work to expose it.

Best Roundtable Ever!

For those of you who've never been, the Pierce County Progressive Roundtable is the premiere networking forum for progressives in the South Sound! At least a dozen of us showed up, all with interesting things to say.

Here's just a few of the highlights:

Sallie Shawl
of the South Sound Peace and Justice Center told us that they just received their first paid organizer, a Lutheran from back East who is very excited about the Watada case and spreading the word about that.

Rich Anderson-Connelly of the Instant Runoff Voting Campaign gave us a rundown of what Proposition 3 will do and how we should pitch it to our friends and neighbors. (Use this meme: Voting yes on Prop 3 will end the notorious "Pick a Party Primary" and give you freedom of choice! How's that for democracy?)

And Jeff Richardson of America in Solidarity and Northwest Media Action spoke about the Labor Day Festival in Wright Park as well as the upcoming anti Free Trade event, Party for the Amazon! He also pitched his blog, The Tahoma Activist (sound familiar?) and encouraged folks to send him ideas for the calendar at tahomaactivist@yahoo.com - that calendar, by the way, is called The Tahoma Activist Calendar, and is a great way to find stuff to do to change the world!

Michelle Pizzo of the Roundtable's Steering Committee capped it off with a reminder that the Tahoma Progressive Media Conference is coming Saturday, October 7th, and it needs volunteers to be a success! Check it out at www.mediaaction.blogspot.com

Remember progressives, the Progressive Roundtable is your chance to get together and plan for the future, without those pesky pessimists and do-nothing Cons hanging around! Every fourth Friday from 7 to 9 AM, at the Commencement Bay Coffee Co. - 2354 S. Jefferson Ave. Tacoma, Washington!

This Day in Radical History

[Excerpted from the Working for Change feature by Geov Parrish, who will be speaking to the Tahoma Progressive Media Conference in October!]

August 23
Things that happened on this day that you never had to memorize in school

410: Visigoths sack Rome.

1500: Christopher Columbus, accused of mistreating the natives of Haiti, is arrested and sent back to Spain in chains.

1834: British National Trades Union founded.

1876: Canadian Assiniboine cede 121,000 square miles (twice the size of Washington state) in Treaty #6.

1900: Folk and protest singer Malvina Reynolds born, San Francisco, California. Was refused her diploma by Lowell High School because her parents were opposed to U.S. participation in World War I.

1909: Battle between police and IWW strikers at the Pressed Steel Car Plant in McKees Rock, Pennsylvania, leaves 11 people dead. The strikers held solid and kept public opinion on their side, eventually forcing the company to concede.

1911: "Discovery" of Ishi, last member of the Yahi Yana, his Native American tribe in Northern California. He would surrender five days later. He had escaped from settlers who exterminated the rest of the Yahis, along with the elk they had hunted, only to spend his last years in captivity, studied by anthropoligists as a freakish curiosity.

1917: Riot occurs in Houston, Texas, when the 24th Infantry seeks revenge on the city's white police after the brutal beating of two of the regiment's soldiers. After two hours of violence, 15 whites, including four policemen, are killed, and 12 more injured. Four soldiers die. 118 soldiers are charged in connection with the riots and 19 executed, most in almost total secrecy, in one of the most infamous court-martials ever involving African-Americans.

Urgent Action Alert: Protest Secretary of Labor Elaine Chow!

[This action alert comes to us courtesy of the Pierce County Central Labor Council, to which I am a delegate for the NALC (National Association of Letter Carriers).]

On Thursday, August 24, 2006, at 6 p.m. you will have a great opportunity to voice your frustrations with the Bush Administration's continuing assault on the rights of workers who want to join a union to collectively bargain for wages, benefits, and safe working conditions without suffering from intimidation, harassment, and coercion from their employers.

Secretary of Labor Elaine Chow will be in the South Hill area as a guest speaker at a "stealth" fundraiser for Mike McGavick, who is running against Senator Maria Cantwell. This event is being held in a private home located on a bluff overlooking the Orting Valley. We are urging all dedicated trade unionists to join with the 25th District Democrats in a protest along the street approaching the gated community. Bring your union banners and protest signs and wear your union colors with pride.

We are gathering at 5:30 p.m. at the Key Bank parking lot on 152nd and Meridian (the northeast corner of the intersection of Meridian and 152nd Street). Because it will be difficult to get vehicles close to the event, we will shuttle/car pool to the site.

Contact CHARLEY STOKES, at (253) 848-8431 or swstokes@earthlink.net or JERRY BECKENDORF, at (253) 229-7903 or jerryb62@comcast.net for additional information.

The Tahoma Progressive Media Conference - bloggers unite!

Washington State Bloggers, I challenge you, to come to the rough-and-tumble city of Tacoma on Saturday, October 7th and join the party as we develop brand new media in several different fields. As the lead operator in the Internet/blogging category, I am in charge of delivering a ashowstopping explanation as to why everyone and her mother should have a blog, and just what they can do for our community, if everyone is connected.

I've already convinced one member of the group, Tilter, to put a toe in the water. Perhaps more will be following his lead. I hope that every blogger worth his salt in the South Sound (or even curious King County bloggers) will come and make this an event to remember.

The Curse of Western Culture is tentatively set to open the event, and my man Geov Parrish will be breaking down why we need independent media so badly. And Suzanne Swift's mom has said she'll be there, which means this event has got a little something for everyone. After the speakers, working groups in several different fields, including documentary film, public access TV, and community radio! If you care about politics, and you care about community, then you owe it to yourself to come to the Tahoma Progressive Media Conference!

Bush calls us the Democrat Party - call your Senators and tell them you're pissed!

Well I never thought I'd see this. President Bush pulls a Joe McCarthy on national television, calling the Party of Jefferson "the DemoCRAT Party." I was pissed, so I called the White House and told the guy just what I thought of this move. He seemed pretty upset with me when I told him the President is in for a war if he keeps this up. I have no problem with calling them one of these colorful names:

The Republi-CONS
The Republi-CAN'T Party
The Re-PUBE-licans (a little nod to Clarence Thomas)
or how about what Sam Seder calls them, the RAPE-ublicans?

I then called my two Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, and told them I'd like to hear them push back on this, either declaring that they are offended at the President's clear deception, or by calling the Republicans the Republi-CONS. The staffer at Patty Murray's office thought it was pretty funny, while the staffer at Cantwell's office didn't seem to care.

Follow my lead! Call your Senators and complain! We have a right to be treated with respect by our Fascist Commander-in-Thief! Call the Capitol Switchboard at 1-888-355-3588 and ask foryour Senators. If you don't know their names, give the operator your State, and he or she will connect you.

Vigilance!

(Special thanks to Thom Hartmann for cluing me into this!)

The creator of Good Times gives us a "Blueprint for Peace"

"The human race sits at the crossroads of annihilation or greatness..."

This quote comes from our Recommended Read for the month of August, Eric Monte's "Blueprint for Peace", copyright 2004, AW Publisher. In this unique and inspiring book, Eric Monte, the co-creator of the classic television show, "Good Times", lays out an ambitious vision for how we as citizens can bring about a new age of peace and prosperity for all the world's 6 billion children.

He opens by outlining our most serious challenges, from hunger:

"In a world where more than half the people go to bed hungry every night, the United States pays farmers not to grow food,"

to violence:

"Between the United States, Russia and Red China, there are enough nuclear arms to destrou the world 50 times over."

Yet despite all the challenges we face, Monte clearly believes that we have the power to solve all these problems and more, simply by taking concrete steps to radically alter the fundamental structure of our society.

In Chapter One, the Proclamation, Monte makes this bold claim:

"I know how to achieve World Peace!"

And the funny thing about it is, you get the feeling he may in fact be right, if only we humans have the courage to implement his solutions.

"Peace doesn't just mean to end war and violence, it also means to end the threat of war and violence...Peace doesn't mean that people won't disagree; it means they won't settle their disagreements with war and violence. They will find another method."

Sounds pretty good, right? Of course, in a nation full of skeptics, a statement like that hardly merits attention. "Oh sure," the cynic is thinking, "like that's ever gonna happen..."

The beauty of Monte's approach is that no matter how unlikely it might be in today's society that even one of his prescriptions could ever be implemented, it's his overwhelming optimism that hits you, like a sudden glimpse into a parallel universe where the good live forever and only the wicked die young.

Monte's work is punctuated throughout with common-sense notions of how people should be treated, and how governments should serve the peoples' interests above all else. You almost get the feeling that Monte doesn't care how many evil, greedy bastards currently command the world's governments, as if he honestly believes that if only the good people among us were to rally together and move forward in this direction, we could truly save the world.

It's pretty inspiring stuff.

"To accomplish anything, regardless of how basic or fundamental, you need three things: the tools, the desire, and the oppurtunity...everything to establish and maintain world peace is already in place...Yes, we are the cause of all our problems and for the first time in history we have the power to solve them."

In case you're thinking that Monte is just totally out there, a dreamer with no sense of the radical nature of his ideas, he lets you know it's okay to be skeptical.

"I must warn you, when you first read the SEVEN STEPS TO WORLD PEACE they will be so foreign to the things you have been taught all your life. Your first reaction may be to dismiss them as the ravings of a madman and not read any further. If that happens you will do yourself a great disservice."

Monte covers a lot of ground in just under 300 pages, from ending the production of weapons of war to ending the practice of inheritance of land, from reforming public education to transforming our prison system to incentivize rehabilitation. Some of Monte's ideas are more fully explored than others, but for me no single idea has more promise than his global vision for education.

"To create the kinds of citizens capable of maintaining a stable and peaceful culture, society can't wait until people are grown to try and indoctrinate them with those qualities. The society must start teaching people at birth those qualities necessary for the maintenance of peace and it must do so by rewarding people for displaying those traits that are peaceful and productive and punishing people displaying those traits that are destructive and violent."

Many commentators have said as much, but Monte really makes you feel like it could be achieved. Of course, those of us in the "real" world know that such a Utopian vision can never be realized as long as the same corrupt and brutal elites continue to rule our world.

And this is the fundamental flaw in Monte's argument. He never addresses the challenges that conservatives, "realists", and other party poopers would undoubtedly have with his utopian policies. Legalizing drugs would cost police officers their jobs, outlawing war would kill the booming defense industry, abolishing national borders would be opposed by every right-wing crank from Colorado to Baghdad and everywhere in between.

And yet, as you read Monte's words, they lull you into the sense that resistance to these policies, though it would be inevitable, would not win out in the end, and you are left with the sensation that a world of lasting and beautiful peace is not only possible, it's a sure thing.

"Blueprint for Peace" is a twenty-first century Sermon on the Mount, inspiring us to demand more from our government and to demand more of ourselves. This book lays out a vision of a glorious future, in which every child has value, in which any who wish to work can do so, and all who give their best to society will be rewarded with universal joy and a peace to last a thousand years.

Eric Monte is a dreamer, a visionary, a man with a love for humanity so intense he was willing to spend every dime he had in the world to do it, to publish a book that, in his mind, could very likely lead his people out of the darkness of war forever.

So now the choice is ours. We can ignore this prescription for lasting social change, file it away as just one more Utopian fantasy, a product of a disordered mind, and go about our workaday lives, oblivious to our own limitless potential, unwilling and unable to see the bright and shining future that awaits us just beyond that next blind ridge, or we can take up his challenge and carry this message forward to all who will listen. The choice is in our hands.

I leave you with the complete version of the quote that that began this review:

"The human race sits at the crossroads of annihilation of greatness - the choice is ours, the planet is ours."

Supporters demand no court-martial for Lt. Watada

This just in from the lovely and compassionate Sallie Shawl of the South Sound Peace and Justice Center, regarding the upcoming events to support Lt. Watada:

(Ft. Lewis, WA)-- On August 16th, supporters from across Washington and the Northwest will converge on Ft. Lewis to rally in support of U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada on the eve of his Article 32 hearing and demand that he not be court-martialed for fulfilling his obligation under international law to refuse illegal orders.

In June Lt. Watada became the first commissioned officer to publicly refuse to deploy to Iraq. He has been charged with three counts of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman, two counts (for the same statements) of contempt towards officials, specifically President G. W. Bush, and one count of missing movement. If found guilty of all charges, he could be sentenced to seven years in confinement, five of the years for speaking out.

Lt. Watada faces an Article 32 hearing, similar to a civilian grand jury hearing, on August 17th. In such a hearing, the hearing officer may recommend the case be heard at a general or a special court-martial, receive non-judicial punishment or be dismissed outright.

Supporters will gather beginning at 4:00 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. rally at the Interstate 5, Exit 119 bridge at the entrance to Fort Lewis.

Speakers will include Lt. Watada's father, Bob Watada; his civilian counsel, Eric Seitz; Jeff Patterson the first war resister to the Gulf War; and Lietta Ruger, Washington State Chapter Coordinator of Military Family Families Speak Out. The event will be MC’d by Phan Nguyen of the Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace. Organizations from Bellingham to San Francisco are planning to attend.

Lt. Watada charges us with supporting anti-war soldiers

Dahr Jamail, independent reporter whose reports from Iraq represent some of the best reporting available from that country, has reprinted the speech to the Veterans for Peace conference in Seattle by war resisting Army officer, Lt. Ehren Watada in his latest article for truthout.org. Here's my favorite piece of the speech, as it tells us what we can do to support his courageous stand:

Three weeks ago, Sgt. Hernandez from the 172nd Stryker Brigade was killed, leaving behind a wife and two children. In an interview, his wife said he sacrificed his life so that his family could survive. I'm sure Sgt. Hernandez cherished the camaraderie of his brothers, but given a choice, I doubt he would put himself in a position to leave his family husbandless and fatherless. Yet that's the point, you see. People like Sgt. Hernandez don't have a choice. The choices are to fight in Iraq or let your family starve. Many soldiers don't refuse this war en masse because, like all of us,, they value their families over their own lives and perhaps their conscience. Who would willingly spend years in prison for principle and morality while denying their family sustenance?

I tell this to you because you must know that to stop this war, for the soldiers to stop fighting it, they must have the unconditional support of the people. I have seen this support with my own eyes. For me it was a leap of faith. For other soldiers, they do not have that luxury. They must know it and you must show it to them. Convince them that no matter how long they sit in prison, no matter how long this
country takes to right itself, their families will have a roof over their heads, food in their stomachs, opportunities and education. This is a daunting task. It requires the sacrifice of all of us. Why must Canadians feed and house our fellow Americans who have chosen to do the right thing? We should be the ones taking care of our own. Are we that powerless - are we that unwilling to risk something for those who can
truly end this war? How do you support the troops but not the war? By supporting those who can truly stop it; let them know that resistance to participate in an illegal war is not futile and not without a future.

I have broken no law but the code of silence and unquestioning loyalty. If I am guilty of any crime, it is that I learned too much and cared too deeply for the meaningless loss of my fellow soldiers and my fellow human beings. If I am to be punished it should be for following the rule of law over the immoral orders of one man. If I am to be punished it should be for not acting sooner. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period … was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people."

Now, I'm not a hero. I am a leader of men who said enough is enough. Those who called for war prior to the invasion compared diplomacy with Saddam to the compromises made with Hitler. I say, we compromise now by allowing a government that uses war as the first option instead of the last to act with impunity. Many have said this about the World Trade Towers, "Never Again." I agree. Never again will we allow those who threaten our way of life to reign free - be they terrorists or elected
officials. The time to fight back is now - the time to stand up and be counted is today.

Thank you, Dahr, for reporting from this important event. And thank you, Lieutenant Watada, for having the courage to stand up for your convictions and defy this immoral President and his unjust war. If enough of us have the guts to follow your lead, perhaps we may just see an end to this war, and this President's criminal regime.

Join the No on Initiative 933 Campaign!

Washington voters and internet activists: you have the opportunity, nay, the responsibility, to go to this website and download these "No on 933" yard signs! Put em up in your car, on your lawn, on your dog, whatever. Hand em out at the mall, give em to friends, slip em into your neighbors' mailboxes (just kidding, that's illegal) - whatever you do, get this message out!

Initiative 933 will destroy our ability as taxpayers to protect the value of everyone's property and the safety and welfare of all our citizens. If this thing passes, none of us will be able to stop WalMart and Target from bulldozing every last bit of farmland to put up their warehouses and big box retail stores. Nothing will stop that evil mining corporation with a majority owner in Switzerland or the United Arab Emirates from opening up a gravel pit next door to your kids' daycare center. This law is a massive ripoff by major land developers that don't even live in this state. Oppose this law, and earn the respect of your friends, family, neighbors, and your childrens' childrens' children. This one is for the history books.

Don't take my word for it - just ask the citizens of Oregon State, who are presently dealing with the disastrous effects of their version of this unholy edict, Measure 37.

Let's work to make this corrupt and unjust law dead on arrival. Vote No on 933, and until that day, let's get the word out to anyone who will listen.

Should Democrats speak the truth about terrorism?

I just found a great post over at the Left Shue, on the way Democrats and progressives should be talking about terrorism. And Crooks and Liars tells us why we probably shouldn't get too hysterical about this latest airline outrage.

I had to comment, because this whole issue is really making me crazy. As someone who has tried to really delve into the subject of terrorism and understand exactly what makes people turn to terrorism, I've discovered two things: one, terrorism is simply warfare by another name, and two, the worst terrorists on the planet are those who claim that they are fighting a global "War on Terror".

You see, what Bush and his gang of thieves have done is taken the idea of fighting terrorists out of the hands of international police forces and intelligence agencies, and put it directly in the lap of Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Death for the entire globe. Donald Rumsfeld, who needed a new threat to justify the massive expenditure of Pentagon resources, couldn't use the threat of Communism to whip up public hysteria anymore. It worked pretty damn well when he worked under President Ford alongside Dick Cheney in the 70s, but upon his installment as Secretary under the younger, more gullible Bush, the time for a new threat had arrived. Enter Terrorism, the ultimate threat for a world superpower with no great natural enemy.

President Clinton wasn't perfect, but he used the threat of terror the way it should have been used, as an excuse to make peace around the world. Though many have argued that his administration was double-dealing in these efforts, and not really committed to improving the lives of Palestinians or other oppressed peoples, he certainly made a good show of it.

Rumsfeld and Cheney, on the other hand, had no interest in making peace. Their focus was war. And unlike their work under the elder Bush, they weren't interested in playing nice. They didn't want to have to mess with allies, or to make any friends in the UN. All they wanted was eternal warfare with a massive pricetag, that would continue to generate massive profits for themselves and their friends in the military-industrial complex.

Folks, this "War on Terror" is nothing more than an elaborate ruse, designed to scare the ever-living bejeezus out of everyone who buys into it.

And guess what? It has worked. Almost every Democratic Congressman and Senator has supported the unnecessary and ultraviolent military operations of this President, precisely because he convinced them that war was necessary to get these terrorists, and to restore order to a wartorn land.

What progressives need to know is that 9/11 was a massive fraud against the American people, and the "enemy" that Cheney and Rumsfeld are always talking about is us, the awakened minority that believe the truth that 9/11 was an inside job. We are the enemy that have the power to take down their entire illegitimate regime, and if enough of us get up, get active, and demand representation from our elected officials, then God willing, we can take back this country and make it safe for democracy once again.

Check out the 9/11 Truth category for more information, and don't be afraid to have your eyes opened wide. Your people, and your democracy, need you.

Venezuelan government offers cheap oil to Northwest tribes

Gotta love that Bolivarian Revolution. Chavez and his cabinet are doing what any sensible administration would do if they had a sizable portion of the electorate who were the desendants of Native peoples. He's spreading the love that comes from nationalized resources to other Native peoples, in an attempt to build a hemispheric circle of concern. Now if only Bush had the sense to do the same thing, we might really improve the lives of poor people throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Lebanon in ruins

Here's the latest from independent journalist, Dahr Jamail, reporting from the crucible that is the Middle East. In this piece, he points out the obvious effect of this bombing campaign, the radicalization of the entire Arab world.

When this war finally ends, the societal, economic, and environmental destruction will undoubtedly be staggering -- it already is -- as well as long-lasting; but it will pale in comparison to the psychological damage which has already been done. Rather than sowing the seeds of a future peace, it's painfully clear to an observer that the seeds of everlasting bloodshed, resentment, and resistance are now sprouting amid the ruins.

Though it seems obvious to most liberals that this would be the natural reaction to having your country bombed into oblivion, I would encourage you to read Dahr's reporting and learn more clearly just how devastating this assault has been.

Cindy Sheehan draws opposition from anti-free-speech advocate

It takes all kinds, I guess. Hominid Views located this story about a guy that was so angry about her protesting Bush he had to come down to her new place and let her know in person. What a tool. If only this guy would take his anger and do something productive with it, like getting involved in politics.

Cynthia McKinney in the fight of her life

Here they go again. The Republican Party has put up a weak-ass "Democrat" to go against McKinney in the Primary, and AIPAC and other Israel lobbying firms have ponied up a boatload of cash for his campaign. Here's the story at Democracy Now. Kudos to "From the Ramparts" for pointing out why Cynthia receives so much ire from pro-Israel groups.

9/11 Commission whining about being lied to by NORAD

This is why we should never trust the Executive Branch to get to the bottom of anything.Turns out NORAD and the FAA lied to the 9/11 Commission, and now some of the members are pissed. George Washington, however, reminds us that there was a lot more lying than just that, and some of the lies came right from the Commission.

What we need is not another crappy investigation, we need impeachment of the entire Administration.

If you have a few bucks, please consider supporting the cause by donating to ImpeachPac, the only political action committee supporting candidates who pledge to bring articles of impeachment against this insane cabal.

One third of America believes administration had a hand in 9/11

Here's the straight skinny from the Seattle P-I: read it and tell us what you think. Seems to me that only 16 percent believing that explosives took down the towers is a woefully small percentage. This shows us that there is a lot more educating to do.

Tell everyone you meet to check out www.911truth.org. They do a great job of laying this stuff out in a way that doesn't seem loony or unhinged. Also, check out our 9/11 truth category for more websites on this subject.

And if you haven't seen V for Vendetta yet, watch it. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Urgent Action Alert! Call your Senators and tell them to oppose Fascism Enabling Act

Washington Post reporter R. Jeffrey Smith brings us this horrifying story: "White House Proposal Would Expand Authority of Military Courts"
Everyone who's ever taken part in a political activity (or even been a member of a labor union) should be outraged by this. If this thing goes through, you can kiss democracy and the Bill of Rights goodbye. Fascism will be legal in America, and freedom will never be the same.

Everyone should call their Senators and members of Congress immediately, and demand that they oppose this legislation, and that they make their opposition known loudly and publicly.

The direct line to the Capitol Switchboard is: 1-888-355-3588 (if you don't know who they are, give the operator your state and zipcode)

It's also always a good idea to call their home offices. Both our Senators and our members of Congress are either already here in Washington State or on their way. Call and fax their local offices, and send them postal mail there as well (Don't bother sending letters to D.C. - Anthrax scare makes letters take days or even weeks to arrive).

Washington Workers: protest the Republican Congress!

Andrew at Northwest Progressive Institute reports on the latest Republican outrage:

HR 5970, which has passed the House and is now heading to the U.S. Senate, contains two cynical provisions inserted by Republicans serving their corporate masters:

* Permanent cuts to the estate tax for very wealthy estates - exempting up to
$5 million per person or $10 million per couple
* Invalidation of state laws providing a minimum wage for restaurant and
other tipped employees, a provision that will affect thousands of workers
here in Washington

HR 5970 hurts the thousands of workers in our state who receive tips by invalidating our state law that sets the minimum hourly wage for tipped employees at the same minimum wage as all other employees. Washington is one of only seven states with such a law. Not surprisingly, though, Washington’s 3 Republicans - Dave Reichert, Doc Hastings, and Cathy McMorris - voted for HR 5970.

The Washington State Labor Council reports that this bill will cut the pay of workers in our state who earn tips by as much as $5.50 an hour.

Join hundreds of workers and fellow Democrats at tomorrow's rally to protest this despicable bill and demand a fair minimum wage bill.

When: TOMORROW, Wednesday, August 2nd at 2:15 PM
Where: Seattle Center - Intersection of Taylor and John at the base of the Space Needle
Who Will Speak: Congressman Jay Inslee (WA-01), Congressional candidate Darcy Burner (WA-08), Rick Bender, Washington State Labor Council

If you live in Washington, please CALL Senators Murray (206-553-5545) and Cantwell (206-220-6400) and ask them to oppose this bill! (While you're at it, please also ask Senator Murray to come out in favor Net Neutrality.)

Here's the PI's coverage of the bill.

Chicago City Council approves Living Wage Ordinance - follow their lead!

It's time for every red-blooded American patriot to do his or her part, to get the numbers together, to rush their city councils and force them to take up this phenomenally important resolution! The Chicago City Council did what no other big city council has had the courage to do, compel big-box retailers to do the right thing by their employers.

Learn all about it at America in Solidarity's website, where you can find a link to the exact language of the resolution for immediate implementation by your city council or town hall. This is the most critically necessary act you will undertake all year, except perhaps working to elect candidates who have pledged to impeach President Bush and Darth Cheney, for their myriad crimes against humanity.

Here's a short post about it from a blogger in Chicago:
