Wal-Mart workers will have union...in China

Sounds good, right? Until you learn that the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) was established by the Chinese Communist Party. According to Wang Zhaoguo, President of the ACFTU, the union has been putting pressure on Wal-Mart to allow its workers to join the union.

In my opinion, no store in America should be allowed to put a label on its products that says "Union Made" unless that union can be certified as having 51% or more of its components made by union workers, whose unions are totally democratic. Something tells me the Chinese Communist Party doesn't let the ACFTU operate freely and democratically.

Okay, this is embarrassing. A guy whose artistic talents I once admired has totally shown his true colors, after being stopped for driving under the influence. To all those folks who think I'm an anti-Semite for despising the policies of the Nation of Israel, I must wholeheartedly disavow any respect for Mel Gibson and his loony point of view regarding Jews.

Hundreds of Macy's workers go on strike

This just in from IndyBay - San Francisco:

Hundreds of Macy's workers went on a one-day strike on Saturday, marching and chanting "Don't Shop Macy's" in front of all entrances to the two Macy's stores on Union Square.

As usual in these sorts of situations, management is playing hardball, planning to press charges against any workers that made a public disturbance. Do all your brothers and sisters a favor and call or email management and let them know that you refuse to shop at Macy's until they give all their workers a decent contract.

Could AA be a cult?

I heard about a fascinating organization on NPR today, called SOS. Turns out they are an alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous that stresses the importance of personal responsibility. You don't have to believe in God to be a member, in fact they encourage you to think for yourself. Their slogan, "Save Our Selves".

This is a great article about cult behavior I found on their website. If you know any alcoholics or drug addicts who have shown resistance to the higher power restrictions of AA, encourage them to check out SOS. It may just save their life.

Ladies and gentlemen, you owe it to America to watch this event. C-SPAN is known for preempting 9/11-related events, but this time they're going big and on the main channel. You have to watch this event, whether you believe the "official story" or not. Even if you think people like me are a bunch of whacked-out conspiracy nuts, you owe it to yourself and to your nation to listen to what these people are saying. They ain't kooks - the President of the United States really did let this happen, or even worse, Made It Happen On Purpose.

The creator of "Good Times" and "Cooley High" is back with a new book about peace

Eric Monte, the writer who revolutionized Hollywood by writing "Good Times" and "Cooley High" and paved the way for black writers in show business, is back with a brand new book entitled "Blueprint for Peace". I haven't read it yet, but I've ordered it and I will write a review as soon as I'm done with it. I found out about Eric Monte on NPR's Weekend Edition with Scott Simon. Turns out Mr. Monte got fed up with Hollywood big shots, got blacklisted, and descended into drug addiction and homelessness. But now he writes on a laptop from inside the Salvation Army and is ready to change the world. I encourage everyone to read this terrific blog post about him, to listen to the story on NPR, and to purchase this book at www.awpublisher.com. You'll be making the life of one brave man a little better, and who knows, you may just bring about world peace.

Canadian paper treats 9/11 Truth with respect

I know, you're in shock. But it's true. The reporter just delivers solid facts and insightful commentary of a 9/11 Truth event featuring Steven Jones and James Fetzer.

Here's the choicest excerpt:

One of the most common intuitive problems people have with conspiracy theories is that they require positing such complicated webs of secret actions. If the twin towers fell in a carefully orchestrated demolition shortly after being hit by planes, who set the charges? Who did the planning? And how could hundreds, if not thousands of people complicit in the murder of their own countrymen keep quiet? Usually, Occam's razor intervenes.

Another common problem with conspiracy theories is that they tend to impute cartoonish motives to "them" -- the elites who operate in the shadows. The end result often feels like a heavily plotted movie whose characters do not ring true.

Then there are other cognitive Do Not Enter signs: When history ceases to resemble a train of conflicts and ambiguities and becomes instead a series of disinformation campaigns, you sense that a basic self-correcting mechanism of thought has been disabled. A bridge is out, and paranoia yawns below.

Steven Jones's contribution to the Sept. 11 conspiracy movement is that he avoids these problems -- or at least holds them at bay -- by just talking about physics.

Like many others in the movement, Mr. Jones sees a number of "red flags" in the way the buildings fell. Why did the towers collapse at speeds close to the rate of free fall? Why did they fall straight down, instead of toppling over? Why did World Trade Center 7, a 47-story high-rise that was never hit by a plane, suddenly collapse in the same fashion -- fast and straight down -- on the evening of Sept. 11?

If only we could get this kind of reporting every time 9/11 Truthers had an event in the US.

One dead, five injured in Jewish Federation shooting incident

This is just great. A lone nutter goes into an office and shoots up the place, and this time it's the JEWISH FEDERATION? I looked into this outfit - they're some kind of pro-Israel travel agency, encouraging young Jews to get in touch with their Israeli heritage. No doubt Fox News will be eating this up with a spoon, and using it to justify Israel's current debacle in Lebanon.

May God help the families of those killed by this senseless violence. I hope this country doesn't allow Fox News and the rest of the corporate pro-death media to drive our entire military machine into yet another endless war.

America in Solidarity endorses Instant Runoff Voting

America in Solidarity, your Northwest-based, grassroots workers advocacy organization has endorsed Proposition 3, which will bring Instant Runoff Voting to Pierce County. Let's hope that putting the support of working families behind this initiative will be just the thing to push it over the top.

The great thing about instant runoff is that it encourages candidates to take their message to the people, to communicate via every available channel exactly what it is that separates them from their opponents. No longer will we have to stomach cheesy country club politicians spouting focus-group-tested catchphrases instead of directly addressing the interests of a wide variety of voters.

Some, my Dad included, have claimed that this will further increase the power of corporations and wealthy special interests, as they can afford to pay for more ads to bring out the base and the far-right nutjobs. I totally disagree. I think this will encourage all candidates to be way more real and responsive, with whatever media they can afford. They can't count on the Democratic or Republican Parties to do all the hard work of messaging anymore. Now they have to take that job on, and hopefully the winner of the first races using this technique will reflect the will of the greatest majority of voters, who got a chance to really understand what it is the candidates stand for.

And everyone in Pierce County who CAN vote, SHOULD vote for this Proposition. It will make life better, I promise.

Education International is deeply concerned about the current situation in Lebanon and the impact it is having on innocent civilians, including many children. EI has issued a statement on the situation which it has published on its website and brought to the attention of the international community.

Both of EI’s members in Lebanon have requested EI solidarity assistance and any humanitarian aid possible.

We are responding to these pleas for help by issuing this urgent action appeal to member organisations seeking financial support for the teachers and their families who have been adversely affected by the situation. EI itself has made available immediately an initial amount of 20.000 EUR from the EI Solidarity Fund, which is being forwarded to EI affiliates in Lebanon, to provide humanitarian support to teachers and their families. The funds will be provided on an equal basis to the Teachers Syndicate of Lebanon (TSL) and the Ligue des Professeurs de l’Enseignement Secondaire Public du Liban (LPESPL). Cool Aqua has a great post about how we don't need to blindly follow Israel in their latest militaristic crusade.

I totally agree. Israel is using everything in their arsenal to ensure that they can control the water of Southern Lebanon, and to solidfy Kadima's political control of the fragile Israeli coalition government. With Sharon in a coma, Olmert has to go balls-out to prove that he's got the stones to be a world-class imperial leader.

Furthermore, Oman has documented abuses of workers, forced labor and human trafficking.

This is another domino in the corporate game of undermining workers’ rights and ultimately government’s ability to protect its citizens from greed and abuse.

Oman Free Trade Agreement passes above our protests

Well, we protested outside Norm Dicks' office, shouting slogans, waving signs, and generally raising hell in downtown Tacoma. Sadly, Norm Dicks, Adam Smith, and Brian Baird all voted for the thing, and it passed.

Unfortunately, it's very difficult to get into the news with something like this. It seems to me that supporting Free Trade is about as easy for politicians to do nowadays as supporting the aggressive military policies of Israel, and both have real problems when it comes to the effects of these policies on ordinary working people.

If you've been watching coverage of the invasion of Lebanon on CNN, you probably don't have any idea what I'm talking about, but trust me, there's a whole big ugly can of worms in there that Anderson Cooper simply will not tell you about.

It's official: Ed Schultz is a Zionist

Ed Schultz is always pissing me off. I tell myself I won't listen to him anymore, but then he drags me back. I'm a letter carrier by day, so I have to listen to something, and NPR is even more frustrating, since EVERY personality there is pro-Israel, not just the hosts. At least on Ed's show, a few callers get through that actually read newspapers and understand what's really going on. A great caller called in and tried to explain the history behind what led to this invasion, namely the relentless assault on the Palestinian people by the Israeli military.

Ed totally blew her off, and refused to listen to reason. He even said "where are you getting your facts?" as if he doesn't get his facts right from AIPAC and Joe Lieberman. But I don't think that Ed is an ideological Zionist, like many folks over on NPR. I think that he "follows the news" as he says in his own words, which basically means that he follows the lead of the corporate media, 90% of which is radically right-wing. And when every single Democratic Senator consistently supports "Israel's right to defend itself", you know Ed is gonna go right along with them. I don't blame Ed for being a bloodthirsty warmonger, I blame him for being a lazy news consumer. The truth is that, when it comes to the nation of Israel, the news we get is absolutely 100 percent the Israeli establishment's official party line. There is no discernible difference. We never hear on CNN, for example, about the shelling of innocent civilians on a Gaza Strip beach that happened a week before the re-invasion of Gaza by the IDF. We never heard on MSNBC about the kidnapping of a doctor and his brother by IDF forces just days before this latest invasion of Lebanon.

Imagine if a group of Mexican gang members kidnapped a couple Border Patrol agents and went into hiding in Mexico. Would we use that as a pretext to bomb Mexico's largest airport? Or to blow up fuel tanks at their largest power plant? Or blow up an old hospital and claim it's a terrorist training camp? The force that Israel is using against the innocent civilians of Gaza and now Lebanon is totally not commensurate with the crimes that have been committed against them. And for us to defend them, under the guise of defending our ally's right "to defend herself", is totally morally bankrupt. The fact is that Israel is now, and has always been, a European colony in which non-Jews cannot be represented in Parliament. In which Palestinian territory is seized under the guise of "security" and won't ever be returned "until Hamas totally disarms". Can you imagine if we invaded Mexico and refused to return the choicest land until every Mexican gang member turned in their guns? It's laughable, and should be denounced by every thinking American.

But that's just my opinion. Don't take my word for it - see what Dahr Jamail, who is there now, thinks of the situation. He's the independent journalist I interviewed a few months back, and he just went back to Iraq, with a short detour to see what's going on in Lebanon. Incidentally, that's where his family came from originally. I'm quite sure he's none too happy about this latest invasion.

Hezbollah may really be provoking this to build up their own reputation, and if so, my apologies to the people of Israel. But I just think that this sort of retaliation against civilians can never be justified. And that's the word.

Thank you, Joji from Tacoma! The Oman Free Trade Agreement must be protested by everyone!

Special thanks goes out to Joji from Tacoma, a student, activist, and future nurse who just called into the Thom Hartmann show during Thom's "Brunch with Bernie" segment. He referenced the Oman Free Trade Agreement, which will send even more jobs and treasure to an anti-democratic country that has BANNED labor unions.

We need to fight this in the streets, in order to awaken the consciousness of our free-trading member of Congress, Norm Dicks (D-WA,Belfair). As the Education Director for Tacoma-based working families' advocacy group, America in Solidarity, I'm responsible for waking people up to the importance of labor unions and
pro-working families public policy. This is a perfect opportunity to advance this debate forward. In my work with the Pierce County Central Labor Council, as a delegate from the National Association of Letter Carriers, I am often frustrated when it comes to putting our support behind such free-trading politicians like Maria Cantwell and Norm Dicks (not to give Patty Murray a pass, who voted for CAFTA). Call everyone you know who cares about this issue. Contact Hong Tran and see what she wants to do in response. Call Aaron Dixon and other Greens to see what their perspective is. Perhaps we can even put together a large event right outside Dicks' office, to highlight the importance of battling these ridiculous trade deals.

Citizens of Washington State: You have another choice! Hong Tran for US Senate!

With the pathetic flip-flop of perennial loser Mark Wilson, the people of Washington State have only one more chance to elect a Progressive Democrat to the Senate Seat in Washington State. Hong Tran is a populist, a visionary, a woman of the people committed to changing the political landscape in Washington. She's ready to vote to end this insane war, to end our addiction to Mideast Oil, to repeal every screwed up "free trade" treaty presently choking our economic throats, and to defend the rights of ordinary, working-class American citizens from the onslaught of Republican greed and DLC corruption. She is the real thing, and I will continue to extol her virtues up to and beyond the August 8th election. I hope we don't have to vote for a spoiler in the General, but if Tran doesn't win, we may have to do just that. A researcher's view of the unfolding 9/11 story

Found this fascinating account over at 911blogger.com regarding the events of 9/11. I've reprinted it in full to ensure that it gets wider readership:

I began researching the mainstream media coverage of the controversy regarding the attacks of 9/11/2001, when reading an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Newspaper, dated June 29th, 2006. It was titled, "Sept. 11 claim stirs UW probe -- Instructor says U.S. planned the attacks to provoke war." This led to my discovery of some wild conspiracy theorists that endanger our government and media establishments, with quite frankly insane assertions. I'll address this in full in the final paragraph.

Then by using a "google video 9/11" search, I recently viewed a FOX News interview on Hannity and Colmes with an Arab Studies teacher from the University of Wisconsin named Kevin Barrett. I had earlier seen an interview with another, a professor named James Fetzer, University of Minnesota Duluth. A few weeks earlier I had seen an interview on MSNBC Scarborough country interviewing a Mike Berger representing 911Truth.org.

Some of these guests referred to an organization called "Scholars for 9/11 Truth" with a website www.st911.org, which offered a physics research paper questioning the official explanation of the events of 9/11/2001. While visiting this site, I read that they pointed to the temperatures of the fires in the WTC buildings, and construction of the buildings, and the speed they fell, as evidence they claimed proved that what we saw on 9/11/2001 when the towers fell had to have been the result of a controlled demolition. Like the ones we've seen with Las Vegas hotels being brought down. Their claim was that the WTC buildings could not have been caused solely by the aircraft hitting the WTC buildings that day.

Then, I contacted the office of a Wisconsin State Legislator, Rep. Stephen Nass (R-Whitewater), and asked to speak to someone in the office who could speak on this issue. I asked if he was familiar with the Scholars for 9/11 Truth website, and he replied they had learned of it this week. I asked him if he and the Representative could comment on the charge that the fires on 9/11/2001 in the WTC buildings did not burn hot enough to bring down the buildings, and if he'd read the scholars organization's charge that thermate traces had been found on debris from the fallen towers (thermate indicating demolition type explosives were involved). The gentleman responded that no, they had not looked at this information, and this would not be something they would look at, further indicating that anyone who made such charges was blinded by their hatred of President Bush.

Which leads back to the interviews of guests on the three television news programs. The main theme of all three of the guests on these programs appeared to be concern of the physical evidence of 9/11/2001, mentioned above and particularly regarding the collapse of three of the World Trade Center buildings on that day.

The main themes of the interviewers on these programs appeared to be two-fold:
1) The guests were representing a fringe movement, and most Americans do not dispute the official 9/11 explanation of the 19 hijackers defeating US military and intelligence forces on 9/11/2001.

2) The guests and those they speak for, who question the official 9/11/2001 account, are of questionable sanity.

This motivated me to do some research. First I looked at the fringe movement issue that the majority of Americans disagreed with the programs guests and accept the official explanation, and secondly, the sanity and expertise of people like their guests who question the official story of 9/11/2001.

First, regarding the fringe issue, asserting that the guests questioning the events of 9/11 reflected a small minority of American opinion. I looked at the only polls I could find on these questions, and the results were surprising. A CNN viewers poll, which is not scientific, held Wednesday, November 10th, 2005, asked, "Do you believe there is a U.S. government cover-up surrounding 9/11?" 89% replied "Yes," they did believe there was a cover-up by the U.S. Government (9,441 votes), while only 12% felt there was no cover-up.

In a national Zogby poll, of May 2006, found that 45%, of the American public felt a new 9/11 investigation should be launched because "so many unanswered questions about 9/11 remain that Congress or an International Tribunal should re-investigate the attacks, including whether any US government officials consciously allowed or helped facilitate their success." An earlier Zogby poll of New York City residents, from August of 2004, found that Half (49.3%) of New Yorkers felt that U.S. government officials "knew in advance that attacks were planned on or around September 11, 2001, and that they consciously failed to act." While 66% of New Yorkers called for a new probe of Unanswered Questions by Congress or New York’s Attorney General.

Now to the second issue the television media interviewers were most concerned with, which was the expertise and sanity of the people demanding a new 9/11 investigation, and some even suggesting possible U.S. government complicity in the attacks of 9/11/2001. Again, a simple google "video 9/11" search, provided a wealth of information.

This too yielded some surprising results.

One of the loudest advocates of the most damning charge that "members of the U.S. government actually orchestrated the events of 9/11 to fool the nation into unpopular wars", was not a tree-hugging Green Party activist, but rather a prominent Republican, in fact a Former Chief Economist under George Bush, and professor at Texas A&M, Morgan Reynolds.

Google research of the growing list of other 9/11 skeptics of the official story, some "convinced of U.S. government involvement," while others not going that far, but pointing out that"the official story is highly questionable and demands further investigation," yielded surprising results. Including a host of high level Republican administration officials, defense experts, intelligence experts, and respected scholars, as well as well known celebrities who are now adding the spotlight of their names to the issue of 9/11.

Among them were:

Former Director of Advanced Space Programs Development for the U.S. Air Force, under President Reagan, and combat fighter pilot Col. Robert Bowman (Caltech Phd in aeronautics and nuclear engineering).


Former CIA Intelligence Advisor to Reagan and George HW Bush and founder of the Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity, Ray McGovern

Kevin Ryan, former department head at UL (Underwriter Laboratories) the company which certified the steel which went into the WTCs upon their construction, and inspected it after the WTC collapses in 2001.

So, now that we've examined the two main issues of concern for the television news interviewers, which was the "fringe" aspect of the questioners, and the "sanity/expertise" issue, it appears those arguments are very weak arguments, really with no merit at all.

Obviously tens of millions of Americans, according to polls, want a new investigation into 9/11/2001 and have a strong suspicion of U.S. government involvement at some level. Obviously not all of the national defense, intelligence, aeronautics, physics and engineering experts questioning the official story of 9/11 are insane or unqualified to comment.

This begs the question, in the face of such obvious facts, why do our media personalities continue to attempt to throw out accusations that are patently untrue regarding those who question the official story?

When a television news interviewer continues to ask questions and make assertions that he or she knows to be untrue, this would challenge the expertise and sanity, not of their guests, but of the television news interviewer.

The 9/11 truth movement appears to be growing rapidly, and involving people of substantial credentials and expertise. As television and some radio personalities continue to behave in what obviously is an insane behavior, what do we do? Can we get our national media any psychological help? If not, it would be wise to relieve them of their positions at least. I feel increasingly uneasy about millions of young minds being exposed night after night to comments and opinions by people who increasingly appear to be insane, yet in positions of authority.

Of course the concern here is larger. If there is any possibility or doubt about whether the events of 9/11/2001 were participated in by members of our own government, then our entire democracy and world peace would be strengthened by getting to the bottom of the true facts of this pinnacle event of our time. It would be unhealthy to leave a cloud of doubt hanging over such assertions. There should be a full fledged national debate, experts from all sides should be interviewed on national media to get to the bottom of this once and for all. Our Congress should launch investigations into the physics questions that are causing so many to doubt the official story. No matter where anyone stands on this issue, this is obviously the only path to national healing and trust.

However, this debate on national media cannot occur if the interviewers hired by national media continue to behave in an insane irrational behavior, like "conspiracy theory wing-nuts." You see, too many of our media spokespersons on television and radio adhere to a wild conspiracy theory. Their theory is that anyone who looks into the facts of the events of one of the most important issues in history is alone, and insane, but yet somehow organized in some united conspiratorial effort. Of course, the facts fly in the face of this conspiracy theory, but these media personalities appear unable to grasp reality even when it is pointed out to them.

For media reading this article, time will tell whether you are an insane conspiracy theorist or not. If you too, are among the insane in our media, the public will likely eventually demand your resignation. As one who writes sometimes on parental issues, I believe it is unhealthy to have insane people in charge of the national information highways our children are taught to watch. We need sane media people who look at facts regarding issues, not ones who launch into insane screeds of paranoia to avoid reality.

Also, you may recall that when I contacted State Representative, Stephen Nass' office, his aid stated that they were aware of but not interested in and would not look at the physics facts provided by the website Scholars for 9/11 Truth, www.st911.org. However, they did want to fire a university teacher for presenting facts, many of which were available on that site. To fire someone for presenting facts, facts that you dispute, yet have no idea what those facts are, and are unwilling to look at them to find out what they are . . . is also insane. Again, as someone who writes on parenting issues, as a concerned parent as well, America should also consider retiring our insane government officials who fire people for facts they aren't aware of and are unwilling to look at. These politicians apparently assert some wild conspiracy theory that millions of Americans are questioning the events of 9/11 because they are "Bush haters" according to the aid at Nass' office. This kind of delusional paranoia by our elected officials is of particular concern. Such wild eyed conspiratorialists should not be allowed in government.

Phony Dem War Party Plan to Steer Away 9/11 In DC Effort

This is an urgent message from Cathy Garger of 9/11 Truth, regarding the upcoming festivities in Washington D.C. during the week of September 11th:

I wish I had it in me right now to write about this. Hoping one of you will do so for me? There's just too much corruption, too much disinformation, and not enough people who know what is going on to cover it all.

Mind-boggling, isn't it, how liberals buy right into this baloney! Let's all hold hands in Washington, DC over September 11 and sing, "If I had a hammer," right along with all the well-paid federal 'minders' who surround Cindy Sheehan's every move.

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love that lady. They just don't come any better than Casey's Mom! As I see it, Cindy Sheehan's one of the very strongest, bravest Americans who's ever lived. After all, she can not help it if every step she makes, every move she makes is uh, carefully guided, shall we say? She can not help it that CODE PINK and all the rest of the "peace groups" won't even DISCUSS the lies that led up to the War On Afghanistan. Remember Afghanistan, boys and girls? You know, the "other" war?

Lies told as justification for Iraq are A-OK. That W is a Bad, Bad Man for telling us about WMDs being in Iraq, thanks to that nasty Saddam. Woops! No. We in Liberal La La Land can't talk about our nation's own use of WMD's (Deadly Uranium or DU). And Afghanistan? Hmmm... Bad, Bad Osama! Or, uh, whoever-it-was (some Bad, Bad Muslim terr'ists) who did those nasty attacks. We don't need to know any silly little details about who did 9/11, however. Who cares if several of the hijackers are still very much ALIVE? No sense looking for Bin Laden either anymore, says the CIA! And on its Most Wanted Terrorist list the FBI states flat out that it doesn't want him for the attacks of 9/11, either!

Why? Oh, Afghanistan's just a teeny, tiny, little bitty baby war. Trivial business. Not too many soldiers dead there. Look over there! Where? Over there! Anywhere but Afghanistan! Let's just focus on Iraq and hope and pray we can get America to forget that Afghanistan's even happening!
