Well, America, it was nice knowing you

Freedom may be worth fighting for, but if your countrymen refuse to fight, what do you do?

I guess we'll just have to keep hoping that our brothers and sisters will wake up before it's too late.

Mom, if you don't hear from me in a few weeks, I'm probably in Guantanamo, or one of those secret Halliburton camps in the Midwest. Do what you can for the family, and don't despair. Freedom fighters never die, they just don't show up in the newspapers.

Viva la revolucion!

P.S. If you want to do something different that may have what it takes to preserve democracy, check out The American Peoples' Congress. If enough of us get involved, we may just save the Republic.

When Democrats vote FOR torture, we need another way

Brothers and sisters of the American experiment, the time has now come to face our greatest fears. Democracy, as we knew it, is dead. Torture and the complete abrogation of our fundamental American rights is now enshrined into American law.

So what can be done? Elect Democrats to high office, attempt to give them the majority so they can continue pushing strong policies against "terrorism"?

Or challenge the entire system with a new way of doing business, of, by, and for We the People of the United States.

I choose the latter. I am calling on every blogger in America who cares about freedom, justice, and the American way to step into a new coalition, a coalition of freedom-loving Americans who refuse to go quietly into the dark night of fascism.

If you are disgusted by this vote, and believe that we need to do more than simply campaign for good candidates, but must prepare for the possibility of a total destruction of the Constitution that made this country what it is, then please, come to The American Peoples' Congress, send your posts to this email address, comment on what you've witnessed this week, and let's build a better future for our children and our childrens' children, so that the glory and the spirit of democracy need not die with us.

Will somebody please get to the bottom of this mystery?

Andrew over at NPI seems to think that our Senators did a good job on this torture bill. I think they totally screwed the pooch. Why don't you go over there and tell him just what you think of their craven unwillingness to stand up to the Quislings in their own party.

What kind of Democrat votes FOR torture?

Here's the story, according to the New York Times. All I can say is how do 12 Democrats vote in favor of a bill that basically gives the President license to kidnap, rape and torture anyone he pleases, without having to bring them before a judge or even admit that he's captured them?

We might as well call this the "Dahmer-Amin Bill", since it basically lets the President engage in murderous and disgusting practices on innocent human beings.

Thanks, Democrats. Enjoy your ill-gotten gains and bullshit reelection victories.

Urgent message for all US Senators: Stand up for the Constitution and oppose the torture bill!

Call Your Senators! Toll-free number: 1-866-808-0065

As Thom Hartmann explains in this brilliant recent piece on OpedNews.com, the Republicans have made a phony show of opposition to the President on this upcoming torture bill.

The Tacoma News Tribune just printed this piece by yours truly today about why I think this whole thing is happening the way it is.

But this is about more than just politics, though that's part of it. This situation is about the President and the Republican Party attempting to enshrine into US law the idea that certain Presidents have certain far-reaching powers to combat what they call terrorism, during periods of national crisis. Because this so-called crisis is likely to never be called off, at least by Republicans, we need to demand that this law not be passed.

Because Republicans stopped listening to their constituents six years ago, that means we have to put the pressure on the "loyal" opposition, the Democratic Senators that have been rolling over as a bloc for the last six years. Our own "fearless" Senator, Senator Cantwell, currently in the midst of a reelection campaign, is one of those Senators who may just see the writing on the wall, if enough of us stand up and let her know how terrified we are that this insane bill might affect us personally. If she knows that her friends on the Left would not only vote for the Green candidate in this upcoming election, but might even support him actively, she might be persuaded to do the right thing here.

Other Senators, if prodded by their constituents, might also take this stand, if enough of us pick up the phone and call our legislators. The number for the Capital Switchboard is, toll free: 1-866-808-0065

Please call that number, ask for your Senator, and give them a piece of your mind.

You can also follow my lead and write letters to the editor. Here's the contact form for the Tacoma News Tribune. If you live somewhere else, google your news sources and let them know how you feel about this incredibly important issue.

Giving up habeas corpus for detainees is like handing the President of the United States the keys to an imperial throne he need never step out of. If he can pick people up without taking them before a judge, he can do it to you. And that is a very scary proposition.

Do the right thing. Write your legislators. Call them on the phone (1-866-808-0065). Do something crazy to get their attention. Just don't let them pass this lunatic bill. Here's the link to Amnesty International's action page for this effort.

For the sake of our democracy, do what you can to preserve our fundamental human rights. If we make enough noise on this, we may just save our country's future.

Personally, I will vote for and endorse Aaron Dixon, Green Party candidate for US Senate in Washington State, unless Senator Cantwell takes a stand on this issue and does not, I repeat, does not vote for cloture in a filibuster of this bill. For those who don't know what cloture is (or filibuster, for that matter), check out this piece at wikipedia about that.

Let 'em know how you feel about indefinite detention!

This phony compromise between Bush and the neocon Senators is making me so mad, I could spit. I rattled off this letter to the TNT this morning. Let's see if they have the stones to print it.

David Broder is an embarrassment. He touts some of our most anti-Democratic Senators as independents, simply because they don't always fall in lockstep behind President Bush.

Independence from Party leaders does not equal fairness. All it means is that the individuals Broder cites are sentient human beings with enough political clout to go their own way when it suits their interests.

McCain, Warner, Graham, and Lieberman have gone on record endorsing the notion that detainees in this "War on Terror" should not have the right to question their detentions, a right known for centuries as habeas corpus.

Habeas corpus is a fundamental American right, and one that no political leader should be able to excise from American law.

It is the opinion of a growing number of Americans that the so-called "debate" between Bush and these so-called "independents" was nothing but a play for the cameras, in order to set up the anti-Constitution conservatives for a win in November.

God willing, this transparent ploy to mislead the American people will not be successful.

McCain and Bush: Compromising American values

So here we go again, one Republican claims that Bush is doing bad things for the cameras, then bends all his principles behind closed doors.

John McCain and Lindsey Graham and that stiff John Warner have betrayed the trust of the American people by allowing one of our most sacred rights to disappear into the arms of the most corrupt President in American history.

That right? The right of habeas corpus.

Habeas who, you ask? Habeas corpus, literally "you have the body", is the right of a prisoner to question the right of his detention. It is one of our most fundamental rights, stemming from the very beginning of citizen-state agreements, the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta, for those who've forgotten their high school history, was an agreement between the King of England and his subjects, which basically stated that he was not allowed to do some things without deligitimizing his rule. Essentially, if the monarch broke these rules, the people were allowed and indeed obligated to rise up against him (or her) and replace his government.

One of the most basic rights within the Magna Carta was the Writ of Habeas Corpus, essentially a legal document that a prisoner could file to ask the King why he or she was being imprisoned. This right, the right to question your imprisonment before a judge, has now been totally erased from our legal code when it comes to "terrorist suspects" in the "War on Terror".

This is a very, very dangerous situation. The bill basically says that if there is a war on, the President can do whatever he wants when it comes to prisoners, and if you can't question the fundamental reasons behind why you were imprisoned, the President will never have to defend his reasons for holding you, which means he doesn't have to pick you up for terrorism at all!

If you are a danger to this President's rule, as some labor and anti-war activists surely might be, you can be picked up and taken away and no one ever has to know why. The President can say you were involved in terrorism, but he doesn't really have to say anything, because no judge will ever see your case.

Thanks to John McCain, John Warner, Lindsay Graham, and the other GOP tools of this fascist regime, the Writ of Habeas Corpus has been "disappeared" for all detainees of this government.

I hope you don't mind water boarding, kiddies, because where you're going, that's just par for the course.

Here we go again. The Tacoma Weekly, instead of running a response to the kooky attack on my sensible anti-933 op-ed, runs a pro-920 op-ed by Don Brunell and leaves the subject of 933 off the page entirely. And 920 is nearly as toxic, throwing huge sums of tax revenue at rich people for the privelege of being born rich.

Correct English translation of Chavez's UN speech

Cort Green of the 9/11 bloggerbrigade sends in this revised translation of Hugo Chavez's UN speech. Enjoy!

TRANSLATION OF THE ORIGINAL SPANISH TRANSCRIPTION FROM THE HEADQUARTERS FO THE UNITED NATIONS
Caracas, September 20, 2006
TPPE-m200906-
Hugo Chávez Frías
President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
Message to the UN and the people of the world.

President Chávez: Madame President, Excellencies, Heads of State, Heads of Governments, and high ranking government representatives from around the world. A very good day to you all.

First of all, with much respect, I would like to invite all of those, who have not had a chance, to read this book that we have read: Noam Chomsky, one of the most prestigious intellectuals of America and the world. One of Chomsky's most recent works: Hegemony or Survival? America's Quest for Global Dominance. An excellent piece to help us understand what happened in the world during the 20th century, what is going on now and the greatest threat looming over our planet: the hegemonic pretension of US Imperialism that puts at risk the very survival of the human species. We continue to warn about this danger and call on the people of the US and the world to halt this threat that is like the sword of Damocles.

I intended to read a chapter, but for the sake of time, I will leave it as a recommendation. It's a fast read. It's really good Madame President, surely you are familiar with it. It is publishedin English, German, Russian, and Arabic (applause). Look, I think our brothers and sisters of the United States should be the first citizens to read this book because the threat is in their own house. The Devil is in their home. The Devil, the Devil himself is in their home.

The Devil came here yesterday (laughter and applause). Yesterday the Devil was here, in this very place. This table from where I speak still smells like sulfur. Yesterday, ladies and gentlemen, in this same hall the President of the United States, who I call "The Devil," came here talking as if he owned the world. It would take a psychiatrist to analyze the US president's speech from yesterday.

As the spokesperson for Imperialism he came to give us his recipes for maintaining the current scheme of domination, exploitation and pillage of the world's people. It would make a good Alfred Hitchcock movie. I could even suggest a title: "TheDevil's Recipe." That is to say, US Imperialism, and here Chomsky says it with profound and crystalline clarity, is making desperate efforts to consolidate its hegemonic system of domination. We cannot allow this to occur, we cannot permit them to install a world dictatorship, to consolidate a world dictatorship.

The speech of the tyrannical president of the world was full of cynicism, full of hypocrisy. It is this imperial hypocrisy with which he attempts to control everything. They want to impose upon us the democratic model they devised, the false democracy of elites. And moreover, a very original democratic model imposed with explosions, bombings, invasions, and cannon shot. That's some democracy! One would have to review the thesis of Aristotle and of the first Greeks who spoke of democracy to see what kind of model of democracy is imposed by marines, invasions, aggressions and bombs.

The US president saidthe following yesterday in this same hall, I quote: "everywhere you turn, you hear extremists who tell you that you can escape your misery and regain your dignity through violence and terror and martyrdom." Wherever he looks he sees extremists. I am sure he sees you, brother, with your skin color, and thinks you are an extremist. With his color, the dignified President of Bolivia Evo Morales, who was here yesterday, is an extremist. The imperialists see extremists all around. No, its not that we are extremists. What is happening is that the world is waking up and people everywhere are rising up. I have the impression Mr. Imperialist dictator that you will live the rest of your days as if in a nightmare, because no matter where you look we will be rising up against US imperialism. Yes, they call us extremists, we who demand complete freedom in the world, equality among peoples and respect for national sovereignty. We are rising up against the Empire, against the model ofdomination.

Later, the president said, "Today I'd like to speak directly to the people across the broader Middle East: My country desires peace." That is certain. If we walk the streets of the Bronx, if we walk through the streets of New York, Washington, San Diego, California, any city, San Antonio, San Francisco and we ask the people on the street: the people of the US want peace. The difference is that the government of this country, of the US, does not want peace; it wants to impose its model of exploitation and plundering and its hegemony upon us under threat of war. That is the little difference.

The people want peace and, what is happening in Iraq? And what happened in Lebanon and Palestine? And what has happened over the last 100 years in Latin America and the world and now the threats against Venezuela, new threats against Iran? He spoke to the people of Lebanon, "Many of you have seen your homesand communities caught in crossfire." What cynicism! What capacity to blatantly lie before the world! The bombs in Beirut launched with milimetric precision are "crossfire"? I think that the president is thinking of those western movies where they shoot from the hip and someone ends up caught in the middle.

Imperialist fire! Fascist fire! Murderous fire! Genocidal fire against the innocent people of Palestine and Lebanon by the Empire and Israel. That is the truth. Now they say that they are upset to see homes destroyed.

In the end, the US president came to speak to the people, and also to say, "I brought some documents Madame President." This morning I was watching some of the speeches while updating mine. He spoke to the people of Afghanistan, to the people of Lebanon, to the people of Iran. One has to wonder, when listening to the US president speak to those people: what would those people say to him? Ifthose people could talk to him, what would they say? I think I have an idea because I know the souls of the majority of those people, the people of the South, the downtrodden peoples would say: Yankee imperialist go home! That would be the shout that would echo around the world, if these people of the world could speak with only one voice to the US Empire.

Therefore, Madame President, colleagues, and friends, last year we came to this same hall, as we have for the past eight years, and we said something that today is completely confirmed. I believe that almost no one in this room would stand up to defend the system of the United Nations. Lets admit with honesty, the UN system that emerged after WWII has collapsed, shattered, it doesn't work. Well, ok. To come here and give speeches, and visit with one another once a year, yes, it works for that. And to make long documents and reflect and listen to good speeches like Evo's yesterday, andLula's, yes, for that it works. And many speeches, like the one we just heard by the president of Sri Lanka and of the president of Chile. But we have converted this Assembly into a mere deliberative organ with no kind of power to impact in the slightest way the terrible reality the world is experiencing. Therefore we again propose here today, September 20, [2006] to re-found the United Nations. Last year Madame President, we made four modest proposals that we feel are in urgent need of being adopted by the Heads of State, Heads of Government, ambassadors and representatives. And we discussed these proposals.

First: expansion. Yesterday Lula said the same, the Security Council, its permanent as well as its non- permanent seats, must open up to new members from developed, underdeveloped and Third World countries. That's the first priority.

Second: the application of effective methods of addressing and resolvingworld conflicts. Transparent methods of debate and of making decisions.

Third: the immediate suppression of the anti-democratic veto mechanism, the veto power over Security Council decisions, seems fundamental to us and is being called for by all. Here is a recent example, the immoral veto by the US government that freely allowed Israeli forces to destroy Lebanon, in front of us all, by blocking a resolution in the UN Security Council.

Fourthly: as we always say, it is necessary to strengthen the role, the powers of the general secretary of the United Nations. Yesterday we heard the speech of the general secretary, who is nearing the end of his term. He recalled that in these ten years the world has become more complicated and that the serious problems of the world, the hunger, poverty, violence, and violation of human rights have been aggravated, this is a terrible consequence of the collapse of the UN systemand of US imperialist pretensions.

Madame President, recognizing our status as members, Venezuela decided several years ago to wage this battle within the UN with our voice, our modest reflections. We are an independent voice, representing dignity and the search for peace, the formulation of an international system to denounce persecution and hegemonic aggression against people worldwide. In this way Venezuela has presented its name. The homeland of Bolívar has presented its name as a candidate for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council. Of course you all know that the US government has begun an open attack, an immoral global attack in an attempt to block Venezuela from being freely elected to occupy the open seat on the Security Council. They are afraid of the truth. The empire is afraid of the truth and of independent voices. They accuse us of being extremists.

They are the extremists.

I want to thankall countries that have announced your support for Venezuela, even when the vote is secret and it is not necessary for anyone to reveal their vote. But I think that the open aggression of the US Empire has reinforced the support of many countries, which in turn morally strengthened Venezuela, our people, our government.

Our brothers and sisters of MERCOSUR, for example, as a block, have announced their support for Venezuela. We are now a full member of MERCOSUR along with Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay. Many other countries of Latin America, such as Bolivia and all the CARICOM nations have pledged their support to Venezuela. The entire Arab League has announced its support for Venezuela. I thank the Arab world, our brothers of the Arab world and of the Caribbean. The African Union, nearly all of the African Union countries have pledged their support for Venezuela and other countries like Russia, China and many others across theglobe. I thank you all deeply in the name of Venezuela, in the name of our people and in the name of truth, because Venezuela, upon occupying a seat on the Security Council will not only bring to it the voice of Venezuela, but also the voice of the Third World, the voice of the peoples of the planet. There we will defend dignity and truth.

Despite all this Madame President, I think there are reasons to be optimistic.
Hopelessly optimistic, as a poet would say, because beyond the threats, bombs, wars, aggressions, preventative wars, and the destruction of entire peoples, one can see that a new era is dawning. Like Silvio Rodríguez sings, "the era is giving birth to a heart." Alternative tendencies, alternative thoughts, and youth with distinct ideas are emerging. In barely a decade it has been demonstrated that the End of History theory was totally false. The establishment of the American Empire, the American peace, the establishment of the capitalist, neoliberal model that generates misery and poverty— all totally false. The thesis is totally false and has been dumped. Now the future of the world must be defined. There is a new dawning on this planet that can be seen everywhere: in Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania. I want to highlight that vision of optimism to fortify our conscience and our will to fight to save the world and construct a new world, a better world.

Venezuela has joined this struggle and for this we are threatened. The US has already planned, financed and launched a coup in Venezuela. And the US continues to support coup plotters in Venezuela. And they continue supporting terrorism against Venezuela. President Michel Bachellet recalled a few days ago… pardon, I mean a few minutes ago… the terrible murder of the former Chilean Foreign Minster Orlando Letelier. I would only add the following: the guilty parties arefree. Those responsible for that deed, in which a US citizen was also killed, are North Americans of the CIA. Terrorists of the CIA.

In addition, we here in this room must remember that in a few days it will be the 30th anniversary of that murder and of the horrible terrorist attack that blew up a Cubana de Aviación airplane in mid-flight killing 73 innocent people. And where is the worst terrorist of this continent, who admitted to being the intellectual author of the airplane sabotage? He was in prison in Venezuela for some years, but he escaped with the complicity of CIA officials and the Venezuelan government of that time. Now he is here living in the US, protected by the government even though he was convicted and he confessed. The US government has a double standard and protects terrorism.
These reflections are to demonstrate that Venezuela is committed to the fight against terrorism, against violence and works togetherwith all people who struggle for peace and for a just world.

I spoke of the Cuban airplane. Luis Posada Carriles is the name of that terrorist. He is protected here just like the corrupt fugitives who escaped Venezuela. A group of terrorists who planted bombs in embassies of various countries, murdered innocent people during the coup and kidnapped this humble servant. They were going to execute me, but God reached out his hand, along with a group of good soldiers, and the who people took to the streets. It's a miracle that I'm here. The leaders of that coup and those terrorist acts are here, protected by the US government. I accuse the US government of protecting terrorism and of giving a completely cynical speech.

Speaking of Cuba, we went happily to Havana. We were there several days. During the G-15 Summit and the NAM Summit the dawning of a new era was evident with an historic resolution and final document. Don't worry. I amnot going to read it all. But here is a collection of resolutions made in open discussion with transparency. With more than 50 Heads of State, Havana was the capital of the South for a week. We have re-launched the Non-Aligned Movement. And if there is anything I could ask of you all, my brothers and sisters, it is to please lend your support to the strengthening of the NAM, which is so important to the emergence of a new era, to preventing hegemony and imperialism. Also, you all know that we have designated Fidel Castro as President of the NAM for the next three years and we are sure that compañero President Fidel Castro will fulfill the post with much efficiency. Those who wanted Fidel to die, well, they remain frustrated because Fidel is already back in his olive green uniform and is now not only the President of Cuba but also the President of NAM.

Madam President, dear colleagues, presidents, a very strong movement of the South emergedthere in Havana. We are men and women of the South. We are bearers of these documents, these ideas, opinions, and reflections. I have already closed by folder and the book that I brought with me. Don't forget it. I really recommend it. With much humility we try to contribute ideas for the salvation of the planet, to save it from the threat of imperialism, and god willing soon. Early in this century, god willing, so that we ourselves can see and experience with our children and grandchildren a peaceful world, under the fundamental principles of the UN, renewed and relocated. I believe that the UN must be located in another country, in a city of the South. We have proposed this from Venezuela. You all know that my medical personnel had to stay locked up in the airplane. The Chief of my security is locked on the plane. They would not let them come to the UN. Another abuse and outrage Madame President that we request to be registered personally to the sulfurous Devil. But Godis with us.

A warm embrace and may God bless us all.

Good day.

Mexico's Obrador calling for a parallel government to serve the people

Looks like Revolution is brewing down South of the border, and I must say, it's about friggin' time. Folks on the Left have been moaning about the poor treatment of Mexican immigrants by our government and folks on the Right have been whining about illegal immigrants; meanwhile, both are symptoms of the oligarchies that dominate Mexican politics, and which have their champions in the PRI like Fox and Calderon. Now Andreas Manuel Lopez Obrador is calling for a parallel government to truly represent the people, something which bears an uncanny resemblance to something I called for over a year ago right here on my blog, The American Peoples' Congress.

Let's hope that this experiment comes to pass. I hope and pray that it does. The poor people of Mexico need leaders that will serve their interests, not the wealthy elites and foreign corporations that presently dominate their daily lives.

If this parallel government in Mexico works out, perhaps we should consider starting one here. Who knows? It's not like it would be worse than what we have right now.

My response to pro-933 attack in the Tacoma Weekly

Here's my response to the pro-933 attack piece by Mr. Ken Miller, which will hopefully get printed in next week's Weekly:

Wow. Mr. Miller certainly does have strong opinions. But let's be real here, cause that's all they are. I'd like to take a minute to refute his assertions, and explain why the sensible choice is to vote no on I-933.

Mr. Miller says he can't believe that you printed such a completely erroneous piece. I guess he doesn't understand what a guest editorial is. Editors have the right, if their publisher agrees with them, to run pieces that don't necessarily reflect the opinions of the editorial staff or the publisher.

To his next point, I received most of my information on I-933 from advocates within the No on I-933 campaign, ranging from environmentalists to government officials to advocates of sustainable land use practices like independent family farmers. Many of the specifics of my argument were informed by my father, who is a City Councilman in Gig Harbor and an attorney for Pierce County's Civil Prosecuting Division.

As far as my occupation, I am a union letter carrier and a delegate to the Pierce County Central Labor Council from my union, NALC 130. While Mr. Miller claims I am spreading lies, I am simply stating what this initiative will likely allow, since these same problems are popping up in Oregon, where the nearly identical Measure 37 passed iin 2004. And as for community organizations, I volunteer with America in Solidarity, where I am chair of the Education Committee, the Progressive Roundtable, and Northwest Media Action. I am a Green, a proud liberal, and occasionally register as a Democrat to take advantage of our pick-a-party Primary. I've helped organize anti-war rallies, marched in support of immigrant workers, and I continue to fought for the interests of Washington's working families.

Though Mr. Miller seems to be aware of the "problems" with the CAO, he clearly has no concern for the populations it's designed to protect, including threatened wildlife species, indigenous tribes, and lower-income property owners. While a buffer requirement may seem pointless to Mr. Miller, it's actually a very effective way to protect smaller landowners from the effects of their neighbors' development.

As for farmers, I have a lot of respect for them. I want them to be able to keep farming on land they've lived on for generations. I'd prefer not to see their kids, who are tired of working the land, sell off all their land to some rich developer, to turn into warehouses and cookie-cutter housing devlopments. The CAO and the GMA make that more difficult for good reason. Preserving family farms is essential to preserving the agricultural heritage of this region, not to mention protecting us from sudden shifts iin agricultural output in other parts of the country.

And as far as my credentials go, who needs credentials to speak the truth? And don't rely on the Farm Bureau, Washington State's largest private insurance company for farmers, to tell you how to vote on I-933. Talk to people you trust, people who will be affected by this law: local government officials, public sector employees, small business owners. They're the ones who are going to be hit hardest if this thing passes.

Pro-933 attack on me in the Tacoma Weekly

Here is a response to my earlier op-ed by some pro-933 character, in its entirety [with much love to the Tacoma Weekly, Tacoma's best newspaper]:

Dear Editor,

In response to "Initiative 933 would give corporate interests unfair advantage" (guest editorial by Jeff Richardson, TW 8/31): I can't believe that you allowed the printing of such completely erroneous information in your paper. I don't know that there were any truthful facts in the entire article. It is so grossly wrong and misleading it is just unbelievable!

One would wonder where Mr. Richardson obtained the information for the statements he made and again why your staff did not know enough about such an important matter that such writing was put into print for unknowing citizens to be possibly led to believe.

I would be curious to know what Richardson's occupation, community and other connections are. Spreading downright lies about the taking of people's property and using untrue scare tactics is abhorrent. It is apparent that no one associated with this writing has read the initiative. One of the issues that is gigantic in the I-933 ballot measure is the requirement for the setting aside of 65 percent of an owner's land under the critical areas ordinance (CAO) for no reason whatsoever. Another issue is the buffer requirement from so-called "critical areas" of up to 300 feet as is now required in Tacoma.

There are many, many such issues which have come to be of great concern to those particularly in the farming community and also to average citizens who cannot even cut blackberries without seeking a permit - on their own property.

The statements made by Richardson are far, far from the matters to be addressed by the passage of I-933. My guess is that Richardson not only does not know anything about the real matter about which he is writing but that he also has zero credentials or less to be speaking on such matters. He appears to be lacking in any way even essential information about the subject on either side of the issue.

If information is honestly sought it can be found at the Farm Bureau's web site for I-933 or by contacting Don Wood at the Farm Bureau, who would review the entire intiative with interested persons and provide additional material if needed.

Five years later, first responders are dying

Firefighters and police officers who risked their lives on 9/11 are dying. The huge cloud of dust, created when something pulverized the concrete cores of the World Trade Center Towers, affected thousands of first responders and rescue workers, not to mention the survivors of the attacks and all the men, women, and children who were told that the air was safe to breathe by the head of the EPA, Christine Todd Whitman. The (Republican) mayor of New York City and the (Republican) governor of New York have chosen not to spend 1 billion dollars that Congress allocated for the healthcare costs of these innocent victims.

Those brave men and women ran into those buildings on that terrible day and this is how we repay them? For the true American patriots that risked their lives looking for survivors in that deadly pile, this is the thanks they get? A deadly disease and no respect from their own representatives in government?

If you think this is as disgusting as I do, please call and email your member of Congress and your Senators about the terrible behavior of these (Republican) New York officials. One billion dollars has been allocated to help these victims and yet the money has still not been spent. Our legislators need to know what is being done in our name. Call the Capitol at 1-888-355-3588 and let them know how you feel.

Call talk shows and email television personalities and encourage them to cover this heartbreaking story. The truth can get out, if we make it happen!

New 9/11 documentary shoots holes in Bush-Cheney cover story

9/11: Press for Truth

Paul Thompson, editor of the Complete 9/11 timeline, is out with the latest 9/11 documentary, based on his bestselling book, "The Terror Timeline". It's playing in limited runs in theaters across America right now. See it with your crew and be amazed. Take your Republican grandfather. Don't be afraid. It's okay to want your President to be an honest man. Sometimes they just aren't. Nixon almost had Daniel Ellsberg murdered in his venal desire to keep the Vietnam War going. These things happen. Just watch the movie and open your mind to the possibility that our government is in the hands of murderous psychopaths. If you don't become activated after watching this thing, you really aren't paying attention.

"If I were running for local office..."

Dan Crall over at the Crallspace has delivered some extremely positive ideas on what he would push for if he were running for local office.

I urge everyone to come up with their own ideas on this theme. Let's see how many brilliant ideas we bloggers can come up with.

Here's a few of my own:

All politicians and city officials must have three open office hours every day in which to hear the concerns of citizens. If they want to get out of the office, they should make a point of going to small businesses and local supermarkets to meet with citizens' panels at least once a week, in different parts of their district.

No outside businesses should be able to support political candidates or ballot initiatives within the city limits with any contributions, either directly or indirectly. Outside businesses will be considered those businesses that are headquarted outside the state, publicly traded companies, and those businesses in which the owner lives outside the city and has more than 51% of his business assets outside the city.

Developers must pay for all anticipated improvements made necessary by their development, including broadband internet access, cable, phone, water, sewage, sidewalks, light poles, schools, hospitals, fire stations, police stations, infrastructural improvements like bridges and roads, etc. All public buildings and public infrastructure will be considered public property and the cost of their construction will be reimbursed to the developer over time, as they are used. If the developer is found to have used substandard materials or engaged in faulty construction practices, those payments will be forfeited by the developer.

All work conducted by city employees or contracted out by city services will be given first to union employees and all workers operating under city contracts will be allowed card-check neutrality, to make it easier for them to form unions.

All businesses that site their business within the downtown core will receive tax breaks equal to the amount of wages and benefits they pay their non-management employees (including subcontractors) above the average wage for similar work outside the city.

All businesses and residents siting within the downtown core will receive tax breaks for renewable energy improvements, and all power sold back to the public utility (via solar, wind, etc.) will be paid for at 8 times the market rate, up to a certain acceptable limit agreed upon by a citizens' energy panel.

All personal motor vehicles will be banned from the downtown core, except in emergencies. The mass transit system will be expanded to ring and criss-cross the downtown core and to triple bus service within the core. Parking lots and parking garages will be built outside the core at mass-transit hub areas, and parking fees will be set in relation to the vehicles' size.

Bike paths will be built throughout the city, connecting important neighborhood business districts, schools, and parks.

All city elections will use Instant-Runoff Voting, which will enable us to end the Primary system. In order to educate the voters about their increased choices, voter education kiosks will be set up throughout the city, with televisions, internet stations, and literature on all candidates and political parties. These kiosks will be paid for with a fee levied on all political advertising by candidates, PACs and political parties within the city.

To increase voter education, seminars and workshops on voting and civic participation will be conducted at community colleges, at city hall, at elementary and middle schools.

Rubber-stamp Congress covers Bush and Cheney's crimes

Tacoma Letter Carrier Tom Chambliss got this op-ed into the TNT the other day. I thought I'd share it with our readers, and get your reaction.

They want you to be afraid, very afraid, not of terrorists, but of Democrats. Dick Cheney and George Bush are trying to use a two year old police investigation in London to counter a crucial victory for liberals in Connecticut, one that scared the hell out of them. They went back to their bag of tricks and pushed for the arrest early so they could get the fear level up in the U.S.

They intended to nip this liberal win in the bud, so Dick Cheney announces that the good people of Connecticut are supporting Al Qaeda by voting for Ned Lamont. Let me remind you that this tough-talking VP hasn’t done a thing to distance us from an attack. We are no safer now that we were on September 10th, 2001.

The real blame falls right on the shoulders of the Republican Congress. They have had all the power of oversight all along but have been cowards, choosing instead to be a rubber stamp to the failed policies. The recommendations of the 9/11 Commission haven’t been mentioned. The Republican-led Congress’ failure to act is the real terror.

This just in: ABC wants you to boycott their products

It's official, folks, ABC and Disney do not want your business. Clearly, if they wanted you to tune in for the Premiere of Lost or to continue taking your kids to Disney Theme Parks, they wouldn't be airing this horribly biased anti-documentary about the horror that was 9/11 on Prime Time television without any rebuttal from anyone in the truth-based community.

I urge all of you to get out there, send those emails, and contact your local ABC affiliates and tell them: "I refuse to support ABC, Disney or their sponsors with my hard-earned dollars unless they pull this biased phony documentary as well as airing an accurate rebuttal of the factual inaccuracies in this program. Until that happens, I will not be watching ABC or purchasing any products advertised on your programs."

And don't forget to call your member of Congress at 1-888-355-3588 - they want to hear what outrages you, and inaccurate statements about Clinton causing 9/11 must surely fall within that category.

The Party for the Amazon needs your help!

Folks, our venue for the Party for the Amazon! is not working out, so we are in danger of not being able to put it on! Please help us find a hall suitable to make this event happen. We need a place that can seat one to two hundred people at long tables, plus room for a band and tables to display literature and advertise Fair Trade products. If you or anyone you know can help us put this thing together, please let us know ASAP by contacting tahomaactivist@yahoo.com or todd@americasolidarity.org - you'll be glad you helped make this event possible!

By the way, for those of you who don't know about the Party for the Amazon!, it's an event designed to educate the public about what Free Trade is and how it will devastate the economy of Peru and threaten the ecosystem of the Amazon there, if the Peru FTA passes through Congress. We plan to have a petition there for folks to sign that tells Congress in no uncertain terms that we oppose this deal.

The vote comes up in October, so making this event happen is of paramount importance. Last time one of these votes came up, five Democratic legislators voted for it, despite Washington voters opposing free trade policies by large margins. Tell your members of Congress that you want them to vote against the Peru Free Trade Agreement. Call the Capital Switchboard at: 1-888-355-3588

Election Thread Wrapup

Tuesday's Open Thread went okay, with two comments (including one from me) Richard Anderson-Connolly stopped by, from the Yes on Proposition Three Campaign - www.yesonthree.com

I am hoping that more folks will come by next Tuesday and every Tuesday for the next two months. The more folks that communicate their concerns about voting and election issues, the more likely we will be to solve our problems in these areas.

One thing I think would help is to make all voting days Holidays, with employers mandated to give eight hours leave to their employees. Along with public financing of elections and Instant Runoff Voting, I think that would make voting hugely popular in this country.

Who doesn't love to get days off from work? And just like Labor Day, Voting Day would be a chance for lovers of Democracy to spread the word about its importance.

See you next Tuesday!

Solidarity's Labor Day Celebration a huge success

The 2006 America in Solidarity Labor Day Festival was a smashing success. At least 200 people enjoyed the free barbecue, the union tug-of-war championship (won for the second year in a row by IBEW 76) and kiddie sack races, and we got many signatures for various petitions, including a petition to tell Congressman Norm Dicks what we think of Free Trade Agreements (we think they suck). Special thanks to Congressman Adam Smith for pitching in and making this year's event the best one yet!

Coming up: The October 8th anti-Free Trade event, Party for the Amazon! Building a Movement Toward a Fair Trade Policy. Check the Tahoma Activist Calendar for all the details on this event and many more. This event is co-sponsored by America in Solidarity and the Sierra Club - Cascade Chapter, and will feature music, food, prizes, and more.

Also in October
, the Tahoma Progressive Media Conference, featuring Geov Parrish, Mike Honey, John Sandifer, and working groups to create new independent media initiatives in several different fields, including: documentary film, Public Access television, Community Radio, and more! Check it out at www.mediaaction.blogspot.com

Last but not least, we will be hosting an Open Thread here on Tuesday from 12 noon to midnight on the issue of democracy and voting in America, and here in Pierce County. Come that day and comment to your hearts' content!

TNT prints pro-worker column! Send in your gracious responses

Amazingly, the Tacoma News Tribune has printed a pro-worker column. Thank you, Kathleen Merryman!

I would encourage all of you to do like me and send in a thank-you letter, and encourage the editors to do more stories and columns about ordinary working people. This is what it takes to build a movement. Do it today.

Kudos to Kathleen Merryman for her column on the dignity of labor.

What a wonderful piece to wake up to on the one day a year in which all workers are celebrated, Laboer Day. I hope that more people do as Kathleen has done,
reaching out to those workers who are clearly going above and beyond: the janitors who work in silence despite suffering chronic pain, the babysitters caring for our difficult children, the electricians working in dangerous conditions, the clerks at the supermarket who smile and ask about us even when they have so much on their minds, these are the heroes of our daily lives.

Let Hollywood have its glamorous affairs, let the world of pop music enjoy its wild parties, and let us have the world of the real, where men and women share kindness and friendship, working in dignity side by side.

This Labor Day, think of your mailman, your receptionist, and everyone else who struggles to earn a living in this difficult time. May we all get paid what we deserve, and have the benefits that strong unions and good public policy provide.

Get your No on I-933 signs today!

I ordered No on 933 signs the other day, and they arrived today! I have great frontage on a busy Tacoma street, so I gave the campaign my address and they brought five signs to my front door. I put 'em up with my AM 1090 sign and my Norm Dicks sign and, boy howdy, it looks great.

For your signs, go to the No on 933 website and click the contact button to get their address and email information. We have an awesome coordinator here in Pierce County, April Putney, who was probably the one that brought them to the house (I was out so I didn't see who it was). This is how democracy works, folks. Avail yourself of the tools of freedom!

P.S. If you come to Central Labor Council this week, there should be lots of signs there to choose from!

Heroes of the Left are being cut down

Folks, if you've read even a fraction of my work you know I am an unapologetic leftist. I believe in peace, freedom and the American way of accepting when you're wrong and working to correct it.

Marc Maron, Sam Seder, and Mike Malloy have all been axed from the ranks of the Air America stable, and for what? Not making enough money for the shareholders? Making enemies of the Israeli government and their apologists in the American media? These men were the only ones willing to speak loudly and proudly about the inherent criminality of colonialism in our time. And for that, they've lost their jobs.

I love Thom Hartmann, but he's content to be a scholar/philosopher, calling for action but not standing up for those who are taken down by the powers that be. Thom wants a bigger piece of the pie, presumably for righteous reasons, but in instances like these, when he could use his clout to defend his brothers in radio, where is he?

One thing I've learned by fighting in the Labor Movement is that you never give up an opportunity to stand in solidarity with your brothers and sisters. Radio is a little different, to be sure, but when it's so obvious that contracts are being discarded without any real consideration for what the people may want, you have to ask yourself, why?

Why, when Mike Malloy, Sam Seder, and Marc Maron are making such an impact in their communities, would you set them loose without any discussion? It seems to me that this is nothing more than a clear indication that public figures can only go so far when it comes to upsetting the apple-cart.

Thom Hartmann does a great job at getting people active, inspiring them to get active in their communities. Amy Goodman as well does an incredible jnob at getting people to know what's happening around the world. But when it comes to the critical next step, of organizing through the radio, using the medium itself to connect activists with lawmakers, to use the power of radio to overturn the interests of global capital, that's where it all falls short.

It is my contention that these three men I just mentioned made the critical mistake of taking a hard-line stand against violent colonial intervention, in Iraq, in Israel, or in some other arena that threatens the hegemony of American investment. And because they work at the behest of a corporation that makes its money from investment in such industries (receiving advertising dollars from the US Government and other suspect agencies) their employers have no choice but to set them free, without a clear explanation.

Malloy has been unyielding in his criticism of Israel's ramapnt destruction of Lebanon. And, unlike Amy Goodman, whose audience is largely predisposed to such things and has been fairly well marginalized, Air America hosts have the power to agitate some fairly meaningful opposition to the policies of our government. Something about for-profit radio gives a host more power, and that power must be tightly controlled.

I hope that Maron, Seder, and Malloy will leave the confines of for-profit radio and join with the growing movement for independent popular media. This is the future, a media that has no gatekeepers because none will have the power to keep their voices from the people. A movement for honest media that comes from the people instead of from the forces of global capital.

I would invite these men to come to the Northwest, to see what we are preparing, with the Tahoma Progressive Media Conference, and to mirror our efforts in their hometowns, to use the power of the people to generate massive changes in the way we create the media that defines and informs our lives.

This October 7th, from 10 to 1 PM, we the People will have the chance to fight back, to send a message to the powers of the corporate media and corporate-controlled non-profit media that we refuse to be kept at bay from the truth. We will uncover the truth, and with it, we will change the world.

Rally to oppose Korea-US Free Trade Agreement

This just in from the Washington State Labor CounciL:

We Demand a New FAIR TRADE Model, or it's NO to the KOREA-US Pact

This week, trade negotiators from the United States and South Korea will hold the third round of negotiations for the Korea-US (KORUS) Free Trade Agreement. By all indications, the KORUS FTA will be little more than a carbon copy of past trade agreements, such as NAFTA, that mean weak protections for workers' rights and the environment, undermining of public services and strong protections for multinational corporate investment and profits.

We do not have a seat at the negotiating table, so we must make our voices heard from the streets!

I-933 a whole lot worse than Don Brunell makes it out to be

Here's the piece the Tacoma Weekly printed a couple weeks ago regarding Initiative 933:

As a blogger and community activist, I've been noticing a lot of big business folks tend to use the same arguments to support the pro-I-933 position, without coming right out and saying they would vote for or against it. Don Brunell is no different.

Don is right in saying that initiatives are not the ideal way to make law. That's because the kinds of regulations this initiative is designed to unravel are very complex compromises between big businesses, small businesses, and residential property owners.

If Initiative 933 passes and becomes law, it will allow any property owner to sue the State if he feels that a law or regulation passed by the citizens infringes on his ability to make money. If that suit wins, the property owner makes money equal to what he claims that he lost due to the environmental and other zoning regulations in the area.

For example: say you and several of your neighbors decide to get a law passed that bans anyone in our area from storing toxic waste, because of our fears that it could leach into our groundwater. If I-933 were to become law, some big corporation that wants to site their toxic waste dump on their property next to yours could claim that their company is losing twenty million dollars a year because of State regulations.

This would force the State to make a devil's bargain: either pay off the corporation or strike down the law that you and your neighbors got passed, specifically to protect your water!

But it's even worse than that. Lots of rich developers and huge corporations have big tracts of land that sit next to State land. On one of these huge lots, an out-of-state corporation could claim under I-933 that they aren't allowed to build housing developments and shopping malls due to the presence of the Spotted Owl or some other protected creature.

The State now gets to make another terrible choice: either allow the corporation to build anyway, despite the effect that development will have on wildlife and the broader ecosystem, or pay the corporation whatever a judge determines they may have lost.

Clearly this initiative, if passed, will have the twin effect of costing taxpayers millions in settlements, and having corporations and rich landowners forcing citizens' to pay for the effects of their development. Essentially, passing this law is less likely to make your property more valuable and more likely to entice big companies to dump poisons and unsightly buildings right next to it, effectively reducing your property's value.

Good government means allowing citizens to work with their elected officials, to determine which laws will best protect the environment and the common value of every citizen's property. Passing I-933 will totally preempt that in favor of Weyerhauser and Wal-Mart, and every other rich developer with no more concern for his neighbors than he has for a field of prairie dogs cowering in front of his bulldozers. If this law passes, you will be expendable, and the beloved property you want so much to make money on won't be worth even half what you paid for it, now that any rich corporation can park an industrial plant next to it and pump out nasty black smoke all day.

The best reason to vote against I-933 is to see who is bankrolling it's campaign, out-of-state developers, huge corporations like Weyerhauser, and rich landowners with nothing to lose.

For those of you that own businesses, passage of this Initiative will be detrimental to your ability to make your business profitable. Small business owners, with fairly small parcels of land, can't hide their buildings away from the edges of their property. Anything their neighbor's businesses do affects them. For example, someone running a daycare certainly isn't going to want to be sited next to a foundry or other noisy business. A company that makes precision machine parts doesn't want to be next to a sawmill, pouring out huge clouds of fine sawdust. And imagine the retail business owner that finds out that the abandoned building next door to them is suddenly going to become a seedy stripclub. I-933 not only makes that possible, it makes it practically inevitable.

When it comes to voting this November, We the People had better pay attention, because if we lose this one, we're gonna be in a world of hurt. Please folks, Vote No on Initiative 933. Do it for yourself, and do it for your children. But most importantly, do it for future generations, who will need clean water to drink, clean air to breathe, and communities in which the people, not the corporations, determine our fate.

Vote No on 933!

This is how you respond to slanderous rumours

Rgular readers of the Activist won't believe this, but some lunatic from my old station (Letter carriers work out of stations) has claimed that I left white supremacist literature in the breakroom there before I left.

This is insane. No one loves people more than I do, all people, particularly those who have faced hundreds of years of oppression by white colonial rapists, thieves and slavemasters. So to have this allegation come out on the heels of my creating the NALC 130 Community Caucus, an organization deisgned to help young people, women and people of color get more involved in the union is outrageous. And considering that as a delegate to the Central Labor Council I am an elected officeholder within my union, this is more than just an offhand remark - this is a personal attack.

So I'm going to do what John Kerry didn't have the balls to do. I'm going to come back swingin'. I've sent the following response to the editor of our newsletter with the encouragement that he sends it to everyone he has an email address for within the Post Office. He may even post it in our next monthly newsletter, the Flame. Check it out, and tell me what you think.

Open Letter to All My Fellow Workers:
An allegation has come forward recently that I left white supremacist literature at Proctor Station before I left to come to TCCF. Anyone who knows me knows that this allegation is not only false, but ridiculous on its face.

My wife is Mexican-American. I count among my personal heroes Caesar Chavez, Dr. King, and Harriet Tubman. I founded the NALC 130 Community Caucus (at www.communitycaucus.blogspot.com) to give young people, women, and people of color assistance in seeking to win positions within our union's leadership. I have spent my entire adult life advocating for economic equality and improvements in the standard of living for all workers, regardless of race, creed, or country of national origin. To me, all human beings deserve respect, for we are all aspects of one universal source, from which all good human actions originate. I do not now, nor have I in the past, ever believed that race is anything but a quirk of genetics and cultural history, and I would never advocate the rule of any race over another.

As far as I can tell, this allegation is an attempt by someone to tarnish my reputation and to blunt my efforts to improve our society and our union. I consider this allegation a personal attack and I will not sit back and allow this libel to go unchallenged. As far as I'm concerned, when you target my character, you devalue my worth as a human being and you divide me from my fellow workers, which simply can not be allowed.

Whoever originated this complaint is welcome to contact me at tahomaactivist@yahoo.com and explain their mistake. Anything less than a direct, personal communication will be viewed as an act of dismissal, and will be likely be followed with legal action against the originator of this complaint.

Sincerely,

Jeff Richardson
Delegate to the Pierce County Central Labor Council, NALC 130

Vote yes on Prop 3 and say "No!" to the Pick-a-Party system

This is it, Pierce County voters: Proposition Three gives you the power to reject the Pick-a-Party ballot with a new form of voting. Instant-runoff voting, also known as ranked choice voting, will revolutionize our democracy.

No longer will we have to pick the most established Democrat or Republican and hope they advance to the next round. Now we can focus on voting for candidates that we respect and admire, regardless of party affiliation. If there are those of us who want to get involved in the nitty-gritty of party caucuses, we can do that, but the General election will be the best place to divide the weak from the strong. By allowing us to pick more than one candidate, in ranked order of preference, it gives We the People more power to decide who we want in office.

And don't We the People deserve a little more power, in the days of NSA wiretaps and illegal occupations?

If you like the concept, and want to support it, why not go to the Yes On Three endorsements page and add your name to the list?
